Matthew Tkachuk's first hockey memory isn't actually his. It's his mom's. It was his first game and "I guess I was like by far the worst player out there," Tkachuk said. "She thinks that’s hilarious." That didn't last long. On the birth of a superstar: miamiherald.com/sports/nhl/flo…

I don't understand how anyone decides cross country skiing is the sport they want to do.
In the roughly 48 hours since The Washington Post shuttered its sports section: -The Wizards have stunningly traded for Anthony Davis, -A Laker got suspended for tackling the Wizards mascot, and -Sonny Jurgensen died. Whoops!
I can't really explain why I loved reading All-Met as a kid (I wasn't particularly good at sports, neither was the local high school; I didn't know older kids playing sports), but realized later it's because they're just the ultimate hometown stories. Sad that's completely lost.
Metro and Sports (especially local sports; did a single local beat writer survive?) getting crushed means there's a huge lane available. The DMV is filled with exactly the kind of dorks (complimentary) who could make a local-first outlet work.
I haven't been in the area for quite some time, so maybe there's some outlet I'm unaware of, but DC badly needs a high-quality, locally focused print/digital publication. From afar, Metro and local sports coverage seemed to badly deteriorate over the last 5-10 years.
One great thing about the Post is it kept valuing design way after other papers stopped. A lot of good papers haven't had a memorable cover in a decade.
I'm taking requests for specific Sports pages to tweet from The Post's collection of color PDFs, which dates back to April 2002.
