First confirmed case of #h5n1 #hpai (clade 2.3.4.4b) in a human linked to the outbreak among dairy cattle in several US states, per #CDC today. This follows a concerning ↑↑ in H5N1 (clade 2.3.4.4b) deaths among sea mammals in several parts of Sth America.
The 1st confirmation of #HPAI in dairy cattle came 7 days ago, & 5 states (Texas, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, & Idaho) have reported infected herds. Now @TexasDSHS is reporting a case of #H5N1 in a person w/ direct exposure to dairy cattle presumed to be infected with H5N1.

Thanks @GregDore2, yep pre-vaccine era. International evidence (via @zalaly, Yan Xie et al) suggests that vaccination reduces risk of these complications, but unfortunately doesn’t eliminate it.

Haven’t tweeted on hepatitis as I’m not directly involved but I see a lot of v unhelpful speculation going on and, sadly, people accusing public health bodies of bias. In a vacuum of answers, people will find their own. The fact is: we just don’t have a definitive answer yet.
