Defund to Refund is live! We want Americans to rethink public safety. We tell stories to illustrate the human cost of over-policing. Our mission is to amplify support for budget reinvestments that redirect resources to build safer, healthier communities defund2refund.org
Defund is not dead. People are still working to #defund2refund their communities to make them safe and build them up.
Today, we are starting with an introduction to the Defund MPD coalition.
Read this entire thread. The abusive policing of Black children runs deep and it must end. We must start investing in their futures, not stealing them.
Three police officers went to an *elementary* school in Tennessee & arrested four Black girls. One girl fell to her knees. Another threw up. Police handcuffed the youngest, an 8 yo with pigtails. Their supposed crime? Watching some boys fight — and not stopping them. (THREAD)
yep! “reform not defund” elides the fact that police departments are largely outside of lower-case democratic control, and “reform” rests on a two-way assumption of legitimacy. can’t reform anything that doesn’t view the reformer as legitimate to begin with.
People promising "reform not defund" are writing checks that police won't let you cash. Yet another example: ppl organized in Oakland for transparency and limits on surveillance tech. A couple years later: police haven't complied arstechnica.com/tech-policy/20…

It’s not easy to control police use of tech—even with a law
A key backer of a 2018 Oakland law says the city is not following the rules.
Another community-driven alternative to policing for violence prevention that is WORKING! Jacobi Medical Center’s SUV initiative is based on the premise that violence is a public health issue that can be treated like any other disease. bit.ly/3y2Pqgj
It’s called Stand Up to Violence (SUV), a cutting edge program run out of @JacobiHosp (a PUBLIC hospital!), and it is hands down one of the most effective treatments we‘ve seen to reduce incidents of violence like shootings and stabbings. I’m asking for fed resources to grow it.
Excellent thread on how attempts to #defund2refund can get shut down through fear and how that is completely detached from reality.
Thread. You're going to hear a lot about how cops need more resources because "crime is surging" in the next few months. It's propaganda, and here's how you can respond:
This Edweek story shows a few examples of the challenges faced when it comes to replacing police in schools. People will push back, but we must show them that safety is a shared goal and there are more effective tactics to reach it than police. More: defund2refund.org/stories/readin…

A good step that will save lives. Now let’s keep going. Learn about other ways we can support public safety without violence at defund2refund.org.
Today is the anniversary of the 1985 MOVE bombing in Philly. MOVE was a group of Black folks organizing towards Black liberation. On May 13, 1985, the city dropped a bomb on them, killing 11 people, injuring many, & leaving 200+ Philadelphians homeless. We don’t forget.
Reimagining public safety begins with this simple realization. Public safety is bigger than police. It’s a goal and police are a tactic. One that isn’t working. Learn how we can build safety through investing in alternatives and communities at defund2refund.org
Everybody wants safety. The conversation is about what is most effective to achieve that. Time and time again, it is shown that police are failing to keep us safe and can actively harm folks. We encourage all of the NY mayoral candidates to check out defund2refund.org.
“People don’t want to live by a bumper sticker,” @ericadamsfornyc says referring to defund movement. “Let’s use dollars to keep our city safe,” he says.
DC's police budget is over $500K. A portion of that would be more productively used giving these kids a place to play than it would be over-policing Ivy City.
Really excellent piece from @paulschwartzman on the longstanding fight over the future of Ivy City -- a neighborhood where new condos are going for $800k and kids are still fighting the city for a rec center washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2021/…
Here’s an opportunity to advocate for a police alternative that could reduce harm and support the LA community.
Ideas like these are not out-of-this-world, but rather common sense reallocations of budget dollars from solutions that don't work to solutions that do. Traffic enforcement is just one area where we can increase safety and reduce harm without overfunding police.

Last week, we visited with @AskMixedCompany about #Defund2Refund, how we got here and where we're going. As fate would have it, it was right after the #chauvinverdict so we also spoke about that moment and what it means.

We mourn #MakiyahBryant. She had her whole life ahead of her and was trying to get help. Are police the right resource when you need help? Too many times police do more harm when they arrive and their first response is violence. We need new solutions. defund2refund.org/stories/help-o…
UPDATE: According to Hazel Bryant, who said the 15-year-old was her niece, the teen called the police because someone in her house was abusing her. Bryant went on to say police shot her four times trib.al/qJvsQJQ
"Budgets are moral documents. They communicate our priorities." - @AOC What are we communicating when we fund police and the militarization of police instead of our schools, communities, and healthcare? #DefundThePolice #defund2refund #defundtorefund
Whatever the outcome, systemic problems require systemic solutions. The need to #Defund2Refund and rebuild our communities will remain. Our work continues.
We hear the verdict in Derek Chauvin’s trial is coming shortly. A reminder: Real justice would be George Floyd being able to return to his daughter Gianna.
There are many ways to improve public safety. Decriminalization and #Defund2Refund can work hand-in-hand to help limit the opportunities for police violence in our communities.
When you see the numbers, you can't deny that cannabis legalization has consistently left people of color behind — and in many cases behind bars. Learn more and take action to support the #MOREAct here: benjerrys.co/2KjelFh
Imagine the communities we could build, lift up , and support if we invested in them instead of investing in violence. #AdamToledo should be alive today. Stop the killing. Stop the looting of community budgets. Defund2Refund.org

Exactly this. We can change the outcome. Learn more at Defund2Refund.org
Defunding the police sounds a lot less radical when you think about how we’ve already defunded government’s lifegiving institutions. All we’re asking is to take money out of structural violence and invest it in systems that help people flourish.
