"I AM TOXIC" Another extraordinary soundbite from Marcelo Bielsa. A self-reflection on his character and his obsessiveness as a coach which he says is rooted in fear.
What happens when you analyse a tactical system from a different perspective? Wirtz turns into a left back? Woltemade's 9 gets flipped to become a 6? Numbers lose their meanings. It's all possible in the context of Julian Nagelsmann's extreme diagonality 🇩🇪↗️↘️↙️↖️
It’s Monday… and on Monday’s we notice. And today we have a real treat because #DidYouNotice we got a masterclass from Pep Guardiola on how to cause problems for Andoni Iraola's famous press…?

It always makes me happy when I find something new. Like this U21 Estonian build-up for instance.
This is a big issue; it's not just about being close together. It's about the manner in which the players are interpreting and collaborating. I think it's important to make training sessions that facilitate the development of intuitive, expressive problem-solving.
A grande questão não é mais se os três jogadores estarão no mesmo lado do campo, mas se será incentivado brotar e adubar inesperadas relações socioafetivas entre eles ou se eles irão basicamente reproduzir um jogo decorado.
Some clips from a pre-season friendly in Slovenia this summer. Only a few training sessions to prepare, emphasis on inside diagonal perception and pass-and-move combinations. Some nice play from the guys. Opposition from the Serbian Premier League.

NK CELJE - Albert Riera - Tactical Concepts One of the best teams I’ve ever faced in my career was during my time in Slovenia against a dominant and interesting attacking team of NK Celje 🇸🇮 📌 In this analysis I will present few of my own principles with examples of NK Celje…
After working with professional players, I’ve realized it’s not always about space or time; it’s about the self-perception of space and time that helps them stay calm and decide better. It’s not the same being under pressure as feeling under pressure.
I don’t think Space or Time are the best ways to frame and analyse football systems. For me, Communication is the primary conceptual frame when we’re dealing with how players make decisions on the pitch.
I expect local interactions like pass-and-move and one-twos to become more and more prominent in attacking tactical theory/analysis. Macro structural solutions are less effective against modern defensive systems. Hence the shift to micro-level relationships and connections.
“You wouldn’t see any of us take someone on, the ball would do the job for us.” Kemar Roofe on Bielsa’s one-two sessions at Leeds and how the variety of combinations within a simple one-two was the biggest part of his framework. Credit: @UndrTheCosh
We're seeing/hearing a lot of this kind of thing from coaches. x.com/ReeceEdwardsX/…
"Structure keeps you safe, but relationships make you dangerous. You need both—positions to hold the game, connections to break it open." Igor Tudor
"...focus on the eyes and the head and the legs of the players and teach the game and not teach your personal favourite style or language." - @ReneMaric [From @ground_guru podcast]
"Tactics don’t exist. You have decisions of players. Tactics is the word people use to influence these decisions." Rene Maric
(1) I call these actions ” Goal/Central oriented attack ” and within the central orientation we want to; ” Create as many lines as possible ” — the more lines we can create in our spacing the more options for lay-offs/3rd man combinations The attacking mindset needs to be…

For modern Positionist coaches, the current shift to set-piece emphasis is inevitable. Increased physicality means defences can 'constrain spaces' (go man-to-man) better and for longer. Positionism requires these spaces to afford attacking combinations. So, we have a problem. 🧵
