I’m a pediatrician who left full-time clinical academics 6 years ago. I now have 6-7 physician side-gigs that have increased my salary (x5) and allow me to take weeks off at a time. Nobody told me that I could work this way, but glad I took a chance. It’s paying off.

Quitting my first doctor job was the best career move I ever made. I didn’t realize how underpaid and abused I was until I left. It’s ok to quit. Find another doctor job if you’re not happy. You won’t regret it.

Your first doctor job probably shouldn’t be your forever doctor job.

46% of physicians leave their first job after 1-3 years. Compensation, culture, and leadership or admin issues are the top 3 reasons physicians cite for making a change—all of which can be mitigated with the right employment contract terms. Read more ➡️ hubs.la/Q03VFbsp0

Are you a physician? Can you write? You are a medial writer. Stop waiting for permission or another degree to do what you do every day.

You deserve to change your career whenever you feel ready.

I teach everything I preach in the Doctoring Differently Academy— a 9-hour digital course & community for U.S. licensed physicians! Learn per-diem, locums, expert witness, VA disability, medical writing, launching your physician Scorp/LLC, & much more! Link in bio.

Being scared of “mean” lawyers is not a reason to avoid expert witness work. Most are actually very nice.

“The lawyer didn’t pay me for my case report because he didn’t like what I said! And he was mean to me!” Docs, we’re smarter and tougher than this. Do not do ANY work without a retainer (10x hourly rate). Write an honest, truthful report, get paid. Who cares how “mean” they are?

Not “allowed” to go part-time? Nothing opens up a part-time position like a resignation letter from a full-time staff member 🤷🏽‍♀️

I have the best VA disability exam experiences with Veterans who’ve looked me up ahead of time and know that I’m a pediatrician. 🤭 They’re always so curious about my career and the conversation just flows.

I charge $600-700/hr to serve as a pediatric medical expert witness. - 18 civil cases since 2021 - 4 malpractice cases (3 defense, 1 plaintiff) - 0 depositions - 1 trial testimony - >$200,000 earned.

Redundant training doesn’t make doctors better and peds residencies absolutely prepare Peds hospitalists for the job. This Peds hospitalist fellowship racket is the work of ACGME and AAP 🤝 to siphon additional years of cheap/free labor from female physicians. Follow the money 👉🏾

I work as a doctor because I’m paid to work as a doctor. I do not do this job for cheap or for free.

Forever glad that I trusted myself and not medical academia. Don’t let any corporate institution convince you that you have no other career options. You make their money and earn their profits. That’s the only reason they want to keep you around.

Would doctors be more effective negotiators if we shared salary data with each other?

I negotiated to earn 3K/day as a pediatric hospitalist in Northern California (10 hr shifts). Malpractice, travel, and lodging also covered as I fly in from SoCal.

When I say “Doctors belong in politics”, @AnnieAndrewsMD is my standard.

A(nother) fellowship or degree won’t make you happier.
