In 2021 there were 7560 opioid-related deaths reported in Canada or 21 deaths/day on average. Adopting health-centred & evidence-based policies will save lives. People we care about continue to die every day because of our existing drug policies. We need change NOW.

Unfortunately people w/ opioid use disorder who are incarcerated in Nova Scotia's provincial jails are STILL not able to start life-saving opioid agonist treatment (methadone/buprenorphine/SROM) while incarcerated Anyone know Canadian legal precedent that should enable access?

I wish that instead of hating the homeless, we compassionately fought for housing. Instead of hating people who use drugs, we compassionately fought for harm reduction. Instead of hating the poor, we compassionately fought to end poverty. Compassion over hate. Every time.

Having a criminal record is a huge obstacle to achieving recovery- it can impact your ability to pass a background check for a job or new home, it can lead to deportation and family separation, and so much more. uprootingthedrugwar.org

This Overdose Awareness Day, let’s talk about why we should #DecriminalizeDrugs and invest in health services. Drug offenses are the leading cause of arrests in the U.S. For more than 50+ years, we’ve used criminalization to deter drug use, yet overdose is skyrocketing. #IOAD

Brandon died Feb 2019 (37), Kyle died July 2022 (22) & Naima died Oct 2018 (28) - all had families that loved them, all had hopes for their future, some had children of their own. 🧵1/

What do people think happens when you oppose drug decrim? When you oppose safe supply? When you oppose safe consumption sites? People suffer and die. Communities and lives are torn apart. It’s cruel and unusual and morally wrong not to support better drug policy.

C-216 would decriminalize PWUD, a huge step for reducing harm around substance use!
