Love to see ppl digging into to how censorship and privacy interact in consensus protocols! An important take-away for Zcash design: if miners censor all shielded txns, they would be preventing themselves from receiving their own mining revenue!

I believe you are asking if miners (more generally block producers) can discriminate between shielded vs transparent transactions: yes. Zooko is pointing out discriminating against "all shielded" is very different than fine-grained discrimination against specific users. Right?

Hello, anti-censorship crypto frens. By far the best—and possibly the only—defense against consensus-layer censorship is end-to-end encryption on L1. Fortunately for future generations, end-to-end encryption has already been deployed, battle-tested, and upgraded…on Zcash.

Hey everyone who cares about censorship resistance in blockchains, you should really pay attention to Zcash architect @least_nathan. Nate is one of those people who says a thing in an understated way, and just once, so it is easy to miss. Don't do that.

Privacy is normal and necessary for humans: dignity, interpersonal relationships, business, free association… Then there are the fungibility / monetary motivations… But as a third category, it's also a lynchpin for base layer consensus security censorship & MEV resistance.

4/ I'm beginning to think that building on chains that don't have base layer privacy will have pretty poor shelf-life. All the more reason to add programmability to protocols like Zcash, or build new networks with a mixture of Ethereum's flexibility and Zcash's privacy.

I think it's somewhat naive to think that any network where certain transactions can be identified as belonging to, e.g., North Korea will ever be able to carry on being censorship resistant.

I'm getting that old feeling where I'm headed to school and still haven't done the homework for the day. Except the homework is base layer privacy for cryptocurrencies and the school is all the laws that will crush anything with censorship resistance but no privacy.

Suddenly everyone will realize why privacy and fungibility is required at L1. #Zcash $ZEC

18/ imo - there's one solution that isn't relying on social consensus or friendly regulators for both bitcoin and ethereum..shielded txs. Everyone saying we don't need that or should wait a decade to add that are knowingly or not supporting an effort to make these state-friendly.

Financial privacy should be the norm. People don't like getting their page views tracked by companies running ads - but don't realize their lack of privacy is so much worse in financial services.

Starting a thread of reasons you might want financial privacy. - You're buying birth control and are afraid it might become illegal at a later date. - You're paying dues at a religious institution that may be the target of hate.

I’m excited to join the @electriccoinco as Head of Global Regulatory Relations to continue a career dedicated to supporting organizations that drive financial inclusion.

Non-fungible digital money is a bad idea. We're about to find out how bad 😬 Zcash $ZEC fixes this.

Why you need privacy in crypto. Imagine what happens if people figure out who the owner of this address is.

This wallet bought 150k Ethereum 5 and a half years ago for $1.5M… It’s now worth $290M 😮
