OK, #drupal core has been switched over to use 8.x as the default branch.
And yes, this is a simple setting which we'll soon allow project maintainers to control directly from drupal.org. Working on it :)
Considering changing the default #git branch on the main #drupal core repository from 7.x to 8.x Any objections?
