How awesome is my UWIN teacher candidate volunteer Alaina facilitating a discussion on Homeschooling with ENG3E today. She jumped right in with zero prep and led a thoughtful and meaningful discussion! @ELLs_uwindsor @uwindsored @GetDiplomaFast
Such a great way to build up ELLs vocabulary! This shows the scaffolded process of learning language @ELLs_uwindsor
Labeling➡️Writing simple can/have/are sentences➡️Writing complex sentences 💘
This was a topic discussed in our @ELLs_uwindsor SLP course, reflecting the idea of necessary for some, good for all. Any learner can benefit from having time to process and reflect on a question before forming a response 💡🧠
The @ELLs_uwindsor course introduced me to valuable strategies for teaching ELLs. PWIM became my favourite when preparing a seminar on the topic for the @UWindsor VME Conference due to the many extensions that can be used to build on and grow student knowledge and understanding.
Necessary for some, good for all ⭐️ These oral language development strategies are great ideas for engaging ELLs in learning, but can also be effective for all students in the classroom when learning new concepts. 🗣 @ELLs_uwindsor
✨Oral Language Development✨activities for #ELs #MLLs These are some of @michelleshory & my favorites. Also, try #ELL2point0 Pronunciation Dictionary under the Tech Tools. Type a word in column 1 & click on the🔗in column 2 to👂 & 👀it in English. 👇 bit.ly/3hyIzVN
Colour-coding words and using visuals are key ways to help ELLs participate and understand lessons alongside their native English speaking peers. I kept this differentiation to support ELLs in mind when I created a mini lesson for @ELLs_uwindsor on personification.
My volunteer experience at St. Michael’s in ESL C was a rewarding time where I got to connect with ELLs and take part in many learning activities. Thank you to @mrsndesj for welcoming me into her class and taking this picture! @ELLs_uwindsor
Our ESL C students put their peer assessment skills to the test by evaluating our awesome volunteer from @uwindsored Miss Cayla’s “Story of My Life” presentation. Along with the Google Slides success criteria, our students also evaluated her volume, pace and memorization skills
Today we witnessed a beautiful display of the positive impact a teacher can have on a student. I was reminded that teachers must see students as PEOPLE FIRST, it can make a lifelong impact! Thank you Dr. Shahbazi for a wonderful year of learning! @ELLs_uwindsor @S_Shahbazi23
In today's @ELLs_uwindsor class, we were enriched by the perspective of a student's journey in ESL education. She placed an emphasis on strong, meaningful relationships between teachers and students, and the role of communication in establishing such relationships. 💡
Use of pictures / visuals and gestures, value and allowing student to use heritage language in classroom, using Microsoft translate and Google translate , having students paired up with students who speak same language.
What are some strategies/approaches to providing instruction to very young ELL students, who speak almost no English? I recently assisted in a JK class and found myself in this situation. ✍🏼 @ValentinaESL @thrillsuril @EFioret @ELLs_uwindsor
The Differentiation Strategies for Multilingual Learners in Secondary Classrooms webinar hosted by @SDLBACK stressed the importance of being flexible and getting to know your student. This is so important with MLL so you can help them with their needs! @ELLs_uwindsor
Hi Marissa! I love @ValentinaESL's questions! Here are others to consider. And @aggie_rutaquio just recorded a show w me on this. She is a great person to ask.
A1) We have a great group of folks that do our intake process. But teachers can also use forms like this to find out what students know. #BoostingAchievement #NCELs
Hi Tina! I love all the advice here. I also made sure that my #newcomers were able to quickly change desk arrangements & that they were comfortable working w anyone in the room. That was our goal. Here is a post w a YouTube video:
5A3) Several grouping configurations that I like & need. So we taught our #newcomers "Desk Olympics." Took only part of one class to teach this. Now they can change desk arrangements in under 10 seconds. youtube.com/watch?v=9tj5Dw… 👈 #ellchat_bkclub #Meta #ellchat @SIOPModel
After watching the recording of the @SDLBACK differentiating strategies webinar I wanted to ask @GenovaHollyAnn , do you have any other suggestions or tips for implementing translanguaging in the classroom rather than translating? @ELLs_uwindsor
As a LOTE teacher, incorporating comprehensible input, which I learned more about while watching the recording about Enhancing ESL instruction with @AnnaTeachesMLLs hosted by @sdlback, is so helpful and a transferrable skill for both ESL and FSL Thanks for sharing! @ELLs_uwindsor
We talked about wait time in our Teaching MLLs course. In my short experience, it is very effective. Even for native English speakers, sometimes it takes a few seconds to process a question. Necessary for some, good for all. @ELLs_uwindsor #MLL #ServiceLearning #Education
Communicating with parents of MLL students. As we've discussed in @ELLs_uwindsor class, it can be complicated. It is important educators use the resources available to them in schools, such as SWIS workers. These individuals work to break down language barriers. #MLL #ESL #ELL
If there's one thing I've learned, it's that #SLA can be difficult. As educators, we can help ease these difficulties by using the communicative method. It is important we make tasks meaningful and relevant to maintain student motivation. @ELLs_uwindsor #MLL #ESL #LearnEnglish
Our methodologies must change! We need to make sure our lessons are not "one-size-fits-all". In light of destreaming in Ontario, this is even more necessary for some, good for all. We need to differentiate for all learners. @ELLs_uwindsor #ELL #ESL #Education
"Methodologies designed for monolingual English-speaking children are inadequate for #EnglishLearners #EmergentBilingual Ss who require, in addition, a second language development pedagogy."-Kathy Escamilla, Laurie Olsen, and Jody Slavick. White Paper: multilingualliteracy.org
