Here, @JimmySomerville snapped holding the graphic of the poster produced to promote the 10 December 1984 Pits & Perverts Ball. The poster was designed by @KevinFranklinA1 and donated to us free. Kevin - we owe you, big time. @PrideMovieUK
#OnThisDay 1984. @LGSMpride Pits and Perverts gig takes place.
The Clash played a benefit concert in support of striking miners 40 years ago today. The gig - billed as ’Scargill’s Christmas Party’ was held at the Brixton Academy, London, on 7 December 1984.
Happy St Barbara’s day - patron saint of miners (as well as artillery men and others!)
Very excited about this event @PortyBooks in Edinburgh..!Tickets at: theportobellobookshop.com/events/emily-p…
From today, women effectively work for free until the rest of the year due to the gender pay gap. It’s two days earlier than last year because the gap has grown for the first time since 2013. We must end the undervaluation of women’s work for good.
The Durham Miners' Association was founded #OnThisDay in 1869. Pictured is the first generation of the union’s leaders. Within three years of its founding, the DMA had secured the abolition of the detested system of bonded labour and had created the @DurhamGala. 🧵 (1/4)

Last week it was the 90th anniversary of the first meeting of the Ashington Group. Check out a wonderful new exhibition celebrating these fantastic Pitmen Painters below 👇🏻 (a nice distraction from politics over the pond).

Great to have the excellent @orgreavejustice campaign in Parliament today. The wait for justice has been far too long. #fullinquirynow
Justice for Retired Miners in today's budget. After years of campaigning the Mineworkers Pension Scheme Investment Reserve Fund will be transferred giving retired miners & widows the pension justice they deserve. This is a huge win for our coalfield communities.#PensionJustice ⚖️
Wonderful to see @durhamcathedral adorned with miners banners from across the coalfield. The ‘Solidarity Forever’ exhibition opened today, marking 40 years since the Miners' Strike. It runs until November 7. Here's a selection of the banners on display… (1/11)
Remembering #Aberfan 58 years on. ⏰ 21.10.1966 144 9.13AM, is made from concrete and corten steel. It contains 144 clocks – the same number of adults and children who died when a colliery spoil tip collapsed into homes and Pantglas Junior School. Thread ⬇️
Very excited to dip into the debut poetry collection by @leahlarwood, which I picked up from @bookhive today. Perfect reading for darkening autumnal evenings 🌙 🍂

Today I am remembering David Thomas, my children’s 3 x great grandfather, who died alongside 438 other miners & a rescuer in the Senghenydd explosion on 14 Oct 1913. David left behind a widow, Mary Ann, and 5 children, who had to walk forward into an uncertain future without him.
Absolutely love the idea of this, and the fact these sounds will be captured and archived for posterity. Music project captures ‘sound of carbon’ by recording in Durham coalmine theguardian.com/culture/2024/o…
A few minutes ago, Unit 4 turbo-generator at Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station desynced from the GB grid system, marking the END of electricity generation from COAL after 142 years 🇬🇧🙏🏻 @RobBurnett92 and I present a 🪡🧵on the evolution of coal fired power from 1882 to today 1/n
Farewell King Coal. Today Britain’s last coal-fired power station will close. While I welcome our turn to greener energy (particularly after decades of importing foreign coal…) it is still a strangely sad moment, marking the end to one hell of a history…
