Decided today to see if I could get to 50 bird species on @EWTRoding. Four hours in and stuck on 49, about to give in, then a sudden burst of song fron a Cetti's Warbler. Great bird for the reserve and my half century up. Happy days! @EssexWildlife
YAH! Saw my first swifts of the year over @EWTRoding lake - a flock of 22 birds. Also, three singing Reed Warblers around lake.
It's #InsectWeek so I thought I'd share some photos I have taken at Roding. Comma(Polygonia c-album) butterfly, when closed the jagged outline of its wings looks like a withered leaf. If you would like to find out more how to support insects where you are bit.ly/2y1Cq0l
To mark our 1000th tweet, this was the glorious view this evening from twenty-two acres on @EWTRoding, over Loughton with Epping Forest beyond. The reserve was alive with song of warblers and thrushes, the call of woodpeckers and scream of swifts.

Bat bricks are old news after seeing these shots of a #dormouse at one of the Essex & Suffolk Dormouse Group monitoring locations in Suffolk. Landowner discovered it while moving the pile but all replaced and DM fine. @Mammal_Society @PTES @WildlifeTrusts @EssexWildlife
A species a day. Day 6. Stellaria holostea. Holostea from Greek for entire bone, relates to the brittle stem. Lance like leaves have rough edge. Its common name, Stitchwort, refers to its use as a herbal remedy to cure runners side pain. Seen at @EWTRoding @EssexFieldClub

Quick notice: Several of the river side meadows are flooded (again!). The peak flow has now passed but with the recent rain most of the reserve is still very wet underfoot. Wellies are advised if you plan on visiting over the next few days
