The people of Newport Beach should directly elect their Mayor. This campaign would place an amendment to the city charter on the June 2022 ballot to do that!

Voters, not politicians, should choose who is Mayor of Newport Beach. As it currently stands, we elect our city council members who then choose amongst themselves who will fill the role as Mayor for a year. Shouldn’t we, the voters, all have a direct say in who is our Mayor?
Well, one former Mayor said this:
Who’s going to tell @SPONNewport about the Insubstantial Part Test? Maybe their tax attorneys eventually.
No. We’re taking about this. Did you know about Jeff’s term sheet? An elected mayor would get rid of this problem. #YesOnB
Is this what the yes on B folks mean by current system and “back room deals?” Just trying to change the system so they have 4-8 years. NO ON B! latimes.com/socal/daily-pi…
A yes vote means that the Mayor will be accountable to you. A no vote means that the same system of council members choosing themselves annually since the 1950s will stay in place. If you want to directly elect your Mayor, then vote Yes On B. #ElectOurMayor
You have the choice whether you should elect your Mayor or whether others should do it for you. That choice is on the ballot because the Newport Beach City Council voted to put it on the ballot. We encourage you to Vote Yes On B. #ElectOurMayor
Under Measure B, there will be 6 council members and an elected Mayor. They would all have equal votes and the Mayor would carry NO veto authority. As the @ocregister explained last week, this initiative does not create a “strong Mayor” system like that of San Francisco or LA.
Supporters of Elect Our Mayor, good news! The Orange County Register has not only endorsed Measure B, but calls the opposition’s positions “utterly absurd.” Read the full endorsement in the @ocregister here: ocregister.com/2022/05/11/yes…
Under the Elect Our Mayor initiative, the Mayor would set the agenda. And the Mayor would be directly accountable to you. The City Council Members could still place items on the agenda just like they can now. Vote Yes on B. #ElectOurMayor
Newport Beach resident and respected attorney John O’Hara rebuts the naysayers and encourages voters to vote Yes On B. instagram.com/p/CdLb6pQrqsh/ #ElectOurMayor
Who should choose your Mayor? That’s the fundamental question. Should you choose who your Mayor is? If yes, then vote Yes on B. #ElectOurMayor
Measure B would transfer the power to elect the Mayor from the city council to you, the voters. Jeanine Bashore explains in this oped. bit.ly/3OW7hP2
The Elect Our Mayor initiative will put the power in your hands. Instead of seven council members in a room choosing the Mayor, you would get the choice. You would get the vote. If you want that choice, then vote Yes on B. It’s that simple. #ElectOurMayor #NewportBeach
Here in Newport Beach, all seven City Council Members are accountable to every voter in every part of the city. A directly-elected Mayor system will maintain the same representation of seven people for every voter. Direct accountability is a good thing. Let’s vote YES on B.
Great news! The Newport Beach City Council voted to place the Elect Our Mayor charter amendment on the June ballot! Now we can campaign to voters about why we should directly elect our Mayor! TY to Councilmembers Blom, Duffield, Muldoon and O’Neill for placing us on the ballot!

Ruth Sanchez-Kobayashi said she was supportive of the measure because she liked the idea of the city’s mayor being more of a deliberate decision than a random one. “It seems like a much more professional way to run the City Council.”

“Newport Beach is a very prominent city and has one of the highest property values in California … we have a population of [85,000] people and a city of Newport’s stature should have a properly elected mayor by the people.” - Mario Marovic
