Elections are complex technical systems. Most politicians don't understand the issues involved in designing them. There should be a standard election code written and maintained by experts in engineering, cybersecurity and political science.

In a historic ruling, Judge Amy Totenberg gives Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp permission to cheat in November; slaps him on the wrist for past security failures & his failure to rectify them.
After no ruling earlier, I expected this. Judge Totenberg denied request for paper ballots this Nov. But @BrianKempGA should not view this as a win. “The Court is gravely concerned about the State’s pace in responding to the serious vulnerabilities of its voting system..” Me too.

A standard #ElectionCode would mandate safe elections a priori, without having to educate politicians and bureaucrats about the technical details on a constant basis.
One of the documents we filed yesterday includes an interesting timeline of the many warnings the State had about the unsafe voting system. They did nothing about it and now try to claim there is no time. No duty to conduct safe elections? …altionforgoodgovernance.sharefile.com/d-s6c1505cb4bb…
To renew representation, you need to IMPROVE THE INTEGRITY AND TRANSPARENCY OF POLITICAL INSTITUTIONS. Integrity and transparency are fundamental aspects of healthy democratic systems, and as such must always be on the agenda. Read more: idea.int/renewal-of-rep… #DemocracyDay

OSET Board Advisor @rad_atl makes strong case that GA’s election and voting systems need serious refactoring. #TrustTheVote
A year ago I concluded that GA’s election system was not to be trusted. After this week’s hearing with Judge Tottenberg, I am now operating in full-on alarm mode. SOS offered no AFIRMATIVE EVIDENCE of steps taken to improve voting security. bloomberg.com/view/articles/… via @bopinion

Dear America: Want secure elections? Stick to pen and paper for ballots, experts urge
Computer voting not yet ready for prime time, say boffins
A standard #ElectionCode would be adopted on a state by state basis, like the electrical and building codes. Washington wouldn't have any role at all.
A standard #ElectionCode could make this happen.
New York Times - 6 Ways to Fight Election Hacking, According to an Expert Panel nytimes.com/2018/09/06/us/… by Michael Wines @miwine Including: 1. Use paper ballots to establish a backup record of each vote. 2. Outlaw any kind of internet voting 3. Verify election results.
A standard #ElectionCode written and maintained by a neutral team of cross-discipline experts would make this something states could do, instead of just something they say. Step 1) adopt the code into law. Step 2) there is no step 2.
"We are always working to make sure we provide elections that meet the highest tests of integrity so that citizens can be confident in the results," Tre Hargett, Tennessee's Secretary of State, said alongside a bipartisan group of officials at a summit on election security.
Secretaries of state from across the country have gathered experts for a summit on election security. In the two-day summit, they'll be discussing Russia, preparation at the local level for the midterms and voter confidence.
Online voting might be the right solution in some contexts, where cost to the state and the voter are paramount concerns. But only if it's acceptable to have a less secure, less verifiable system with no secret ballots. Elections are engineered systems with inherent tradeoffs.
At first blush it’s understandable why many would think that Internet voting is a good idea… shouldn’t it be faster, better and cheaper than our current paper-based voting system? But the reality is very different electoral-reform.org.uk/why-cant-we-vo…
New Hampshire voters tomorrow: Any voter who does not present an approved photo ID, or have their identity verified by an election official, will be permitted to vote after executing a challenged voter affidavit
A standard #ElectionCode would codify best practice standards and keep officials from having to educate politicians over and over in order to get the backing needed to have secure elections.
