random #rstats quiz: What does the following line of code return: if(TRUE){1}else{0} + if(TRUE){1}else{0}. Hint: it's not 2. See stackoverflow.com/q/70271938/237…

I've now added a plain-javascript-based GIF encoder to my guide to the GIF file format. Feel free to play around with it to see how LZW compression works matthewflickinger.com/lab/whatsinagi…

I needed an easy way to extract Exif data in #rstats without any system dependencies so I wrote a new package. I seem to enjoy parsing binary files and learning about their structure. github.com/MrFlick/readex…

Quick #rstats quiz. Are the values of x and y the same or different? stackoverflow.com/q/63432936/237…

Today I finished writing a pure javascript GIF decoder for my "What's in a GIF" guide to the beloved image file format. I've been meaning to do this for years now. Fun quarantine project. matthewflickinger.com/lab/whatsinagi…

Not muting your mic is the new reply all

Today I learned it's possible to call return() in #rstats even when you're not inside a function. For example: with(iris, return(max(Sepal.Length))) -- tough the return() here is very much unnecessary, but there is no error. via stackoverflow.com/q/60567574/237…

The best thing about computers is they do exactly what you tell them to do. The worst thing about computers is they do exactly what you tell them to do.

Were you looking for a 4 min rap battle describing the differences between data science and statistics? Well, here you go... youtu.be/uHGlCi9jOWY

Interesting thread on plotting health data on maps

I told my graphics class to solve the overplotting problem in this dataset using smaller point sizes, transparency and geom_hex(). And when they do... a hidden figure emerges from the points.

The Stepping Feet Illusion At first it appears that the 'feet' are stepping & out of sync, but the illusion disappears upon turning down the contrast

Throwing up hex signs at #rstudioconf with @psboonstra. Great end to a fun conference.

Headed to #rstudioconf in San Francisco to be a teaching assistant for the Into to Data Science Workshop taught by @AmeliaMN and @hadleywickham. Excited to help others learn #rstats

A few times a year, I get asked to be a judge of student statistical projects in politics or sports. While the students are very bright, they spend WAY too much time using fancy statistical methods and not enough time framing the right questions and contextualizing their answers.

In my intro stats class today, I told students the median is a ”resistant” measure of a distribution’s center & is often preferred to the mean in the case of salary data, etc. I jokingly referenced this meme and in the 15 mins’ break they had, a student created this MASTERPIECE!
