Writing for social change in Engl this week - several students complained about a class policy I may now overturn! Rhetoric meets audience.


Students have trouble with note-taking 'synthesis', even at the college level. "A new idea that's not in your book," seemed to help today.


Reading Dorian Gray; "try and" is rampant. Was I wrong? To me, "try" implies possibly unrealized acts - so "try to"? But, common usage wins!


Sifting through hotel reviews for a quick trip to Vegas...repeated reviews with "room 'smelt' bad"...are we referring to metallurgy or fish?


Recollection: A possessive form observed among some of my students in northern FL: "That's Kevin phone," rather than "That's Kevin's phone"
