“Public sphere (e. g., debating Brexit) plays an important role in the emergence of a common identity” [Risse 2008]. Such debates (about Brexit) closely connect the people with EU, further consolidating this way the European Identity. Suffer is the way God's makes us stronger.
Eurobarometer 71 [2009, 34] indicates that in 2008, 59% of Europeans felt as citizens of the world whereas in 2009 the cosmopolitan identity in Europe increased to a record rate of 64%.
According to the study of Euroakademia [2012] “Europe cores the highest in the level of cosmopolitan identity… That is why it is so important to consider cosmopolitanism in the study of European supranational identities”.
Delanty [2005, 4] attaches some cosmopolitan meaning to the European identity when he asserts that “to be European is simply to recognize that one lives in a world that does not belong to a specific people”.
Eurobarometer 38 [1992, 45] reported that 23% of Europeans believed at the time that national identities would disappear and would be replaced by European identity, whereas 63% believed that the two identities are compatible and can co-exist.
European Identity is a western European continental sense of belonging to a European community. It is post-national identity combined with national elements whose evolution requires a constitution to serve as a social contract which will make Europeans loyal to the constitution.
Delanty [2005, 2] upholds that European identity is a pyramid of identities with European identity at the top.
