Sectioning sediment cores on board the R/V Pelican QUALIFIED cruise in the Gulf of Mexico! These cores will be extracted for DNA and RNA to analyze how microbial community and activity changes with depth. #nsffunded

The @ExtremeGeoBio lab is well represented at #ISME19 this week. Are you here too? Let’s catch up!

PhD student Lydia talks about how deep sea fungi can survive in the deep subsurface, how they are sampled, and what scientists are learning about their ecological roles. Watch on youtube or on our lab website news page! youtube.com/watch?v=ixAYTw… instagram.com/p/C9u-RIYOuFN/…

Check out S1 E6 of Absolute Gene-ius podcast to hear Dr. Brandi Kiel Reese and Lydia Hayes-Guastella talk about using digital PCR and other methods to study microbial life and survivability in extreme environments!

Do you want to study microbial methane cycling in the Ross Sea sediments? Well, I have the #nsffunded project for you! Spread the word that I’m looking for a #postdoc (and they can compliment it with an #nsfprf of their own). nsf.gov/pubs/2022/nsf2…

Our summer interns and REU student are working on some exciting research in the Kiel Reese lab! 😁🥼🦠🧫 instagram.com/p/CthKt1bu0iF/…

You know what’s cool about discovering new subsurface microbial species? Getting to name them! Introducing new publication from our lab lead by @MorganMicro and colleagues. doi.org/10.1186/s12864…

Greetings from the #kilomoana we have been busy on our cruise to the Mariana Forearc. We had our first dive with JASON, and recovered many samples yesterday. Here I am helping to set up the HOG sampler! #science #geomicrobiology #microbiology #NSFfunded

Phenol shortage?! For the molecular micro types, where are you sourcing phenol (RNA; 4.3 pH)? VWR just informed me that it will take 800 DAYS before shipping. Fisher says it’s discontinued.

This loss is senseless and had shaken the entire geoscience community, with me as no exception. He was a generous and kind man, incredibly intelligent and giving.

In loving memory of Dr. Thomas Meixner Tom was a wonderful and kind person, whose larger-than-life approach to being and doing inspired those around him and elevated the community. The world is different without him. He will be missed and loved by all. @uarizona
