Democracy, for me, is both process and substance. A democratic country is one where there are free and fair elections, AND the overwhelming majority of the electorate stands behind key concepts such as separation of powers, rule of law, freedom of speech.

Sometimes it feels like economists use “expectations” the way physics uses dark matter: filling the gap between model and observable reality. (Only physics admits it’s “dark” to it.) How strong is the evidence that expectations indeed play a decisive role in the economy?

It’s not surprising that the White House “doesn’t care about the Europeans”. What is shocking is that the European leaders don’t care about the Europeans. 🇪🇺📉

NEW: A senior White House official tells me a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine could come as soon “as soon as this week” and likely by the end of the month. They believe Ukraine is in a position to accept a deal Witkoff has hammered out with Russia (according to…

Dagnabbit! The debate isn’t about whether banks creatr money (deposits) when they lend: everyone gets that. But the fact that they doesn’t mean that they don’t need to borrow to fund their lending. And that’s what team “banks aren’t internediaries” doesn’t get.

Actually there's a whole load of banky folk insistent that banks create new money when they lend it economania.co.uk/various-author…

7/13 The EU suffers in some case not because it necessarily has bad domestic policies but because many of its policies, while collectively good for the world and good for global growth, undermine its competitiveness relative to countries that don't follow similar policies.

🧵No wonder🇨🇳thinks the west is so incompetent and decadent. A small insurance company that specialised in selling liability insurance to FBI and CIA agents was sold to a Chinese entity.

Alternatively, letting this army be incorporated into Russia’s order of battle by letting Ukraine lose means the EU has an even tougher war to fight later on.

Yes, ordinary banks can create money “out of thin air”—I have repeatedly said so. And so can you and I, just by writing checks. What neither they nor we can do is get away with creating money without havings funds with which to back it up. Bad checks bounce.

Dude banks create money out of thin air. They need only your promise to pay them back, and—with that—you and the bank co-created money out of your signature. You can create your own money if the bank accepted your promise.

the drop in German industrial production in 2023 corresponds closely with the acceleration in Chinese exports at roughly the same point in time ... tis in large part the second China shock (aided and abetted by the Russian gas shock) 1/2

Is anyone thinking about preventing Orban from making billions off selling cheap Russian oil for whose purchase he received an sanctions exemption from Trump?

The initial impact of oil sanctions against Lukoil and Rosneft seems to be bigger than I expected: Discounts are widening even more, to 24 dollars, as Chinese and Indian refiners are reluctant to buy. Bloomberg reports that Russian Urals fell to 36 dollars.

Can we please retire the 'so and so angered Beijing' trope? It's getting tiresome. The real story is a different one: The sovereign nation 🇯🇵 is willing to defend its sovereignty. A sea blockade of Taiwan would wreak havoc for Japan and the region. theguardian.com/world/2025/nov…

Pretty obvious tbh

Polish people realize that if Russia wins in Ukraine, it will enslave the Ukrainians and send them to invade Poland (just as it has already enslaved the people of the Donbas and sent them to fight the rest of Ukraine).

Word.

The core problem is that “Western imperialism” is an ideological construct, not an analytical category. Every policy by Western state is seen through a colonialist lens, regardless of context, intent, or empirical effect. Once that premise is adopted, the normative conclusion…

If you're wondering why Germany works the way it does, here's a big part of the answer. Young people have little influence, acting against the interests of older voters is political suicide
