I think Trier only re-creates paintings to elevate his films above the rest. He often make this in his films, and usually with no other purpose than art for art's sake.

Does Trier deserve more respect?

Any chance this will be region free? Or just Region A?

How many ridiculous panty-shots do you think are in this movie?

I watched the last emperor (1987) last night. Seems to be a very polarising movie in terms of reception: on the one hand people recognise the lavish sets and epic scope, on the other people find the acting bland and the plot to be lacking tension. What do people think?

I thought Achilles was a self righteous prick when I read The Iliad. The movie got that right in fariness to it.

It’s a white glove inspection of the firearm made into a fancy demonstration of right angles and spins to be showy. The clenched sphincter of our finest U.S. Marine really luxuriates in both bolt-upright pageantry and fastidious gear maintenance.

I wrote about Starship Troopers for The New Yorker this week, which is the sort of thing I would've dreamt about doing for years if I'd known it was even possible. The downside is that the movie feels very current. newyorker.com/culture/cultur…

Why shouldn’t film be analytical and academic?

Just ordered the Before Trilogy from Criterion and the Cinema of Conflict from Arrow. Both limited edition, both very tasty.
