Your pitch should be the dream, your design should be how to build that dream. One cannot live without the other.

The mechanic in Minecraft is "you press a button repeatedly to get a resource so you can build something"... The pitch is "build anything"!

So how do you convince someone an idea is great? A document? A presentation? A prototype? You usually only have one shot, make it count!

I'd even argue that true game design is convincing others that even the smallest great idea is worth their valuable time...

Everybody has great ideas. Game design however is 5% about great ideas, 95% convincing others its a great idea and how you can get there...

Be prepared to answer this question... What is the best game you ever played and how would you make it even better?

Prepare some fairly technical questions in case the interviewer allows time for them. It shows you are organised, prepared and skillful...

During the interview, have examples of your best work ready in your head. Use them in your answers! "When I made X, what worked best was..."

Bit of an obvious one but make sure you play the games of the studio you are applying. They will ask questions about them!

Interviewers are looking for original thoughts. Anybody can drone up a basic level design process; what new element do you add to the mix?

Same as with resumes, stay on point in phone interviews. Try to keep your answer as short as possible while mentioning only vital info.

Todays tip topic: phone interviews!

Understanding your weaknesses as a game dev shows honesty and strength, turn them into personal goals and put those in your cover letter!

Welcome new followers! We are just getting started but as a reminder, we our focusing our tips on Resumes and Portfolios! Requests welcome!

Because game- and level designers need many other disciplines to succeed, process is key. Managing that process will be your responsibility!

Specifically for game- and level designers, describing your personal process on your portfolio is important. How did you get to your result?

Adding your photo to your game dev resume is okay but make sure it's a simple portrait. The amount of resumes with people holding AK47s.....

Keep your game dev resume short and to the point; two pages max is a good rule. Original formatting is fine, just don't overdo it.

"If a person can make something very creative in their limited spare time, imagine what they can do when it's their full-time job..."
