#OTD 6 December, 1812, as Napoleon passed Vilna, the Grande Armée learned of his departure a day ago. It was the last straw; disoriented and shivering from -37.5°C of cold, most of the army let go of any trace of civility and morale. #Voicesfrom1812

I am now the owner of a 200-year-old German war memorial. It needs a lot of work, but I'm excited! I don't know anything about it, where it's from, or how it got to the western US, so if you have any idea, let me know.

So despite chatting to @ZwhiteHistory for the Napoleonic Wars podcast about Marshal Oudinot for 90 mins yesterday, I only used half my notes about him. So it looks like Oudinot week on this account! An amusing little story of Oudinot’s time as governor of Erfurt…

223 years ago today, a cabal of French politicians & generals launched the Coup of 18 Brumaire. 2 days of farce & chaos ensued -- conspiracies, fevered speeches, soldiers in the streets, and oaths taken under duress. When the dust settled, General Napoleon Bonaparte ruled France.

Unacceptable

Disappointing to see a Cork based historical society blatantly copy my work word for word and posted on their Facebook page without so much as an acknowledgement. Now reported for copyright infringement!

This is timely

No CGI. Just Soviet filmmaking. All four parts of Bondarchuk’s adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace (1966-1967), considered among the best films of all time, are now uploaded in Mosfilm’s YouTube account in glorious and restored 4K.

#OTD 5 September, 1812, Murat, Davout, Eugene, and Poniatowski stormed the Shevardino Redoubt defended by Prince Gorchakov. At night, Napoleon occupied this left flank outpost of the Russians at Borodino, marking a prelude to the bloodiest battle of 1812. #Voicesfrom1812
