Just like tramadol, codeine abuse (in the form of cough syrups) is very common. Read more here 👇🏼

Just like tramadol #codeine is an opioid drug which is used as a pain killer. Unlike tramadol, it has remarkable cough-suppressing properties and causes drowsiness like most other opioids.

There are naturally occurring chemicals, called ‘endorphins’, in the brain which reduce our feeling of pain and make us feel good when released, by acting on ‘opioid’ receptors in the brain. If released in sufficient quantities, endorphins can make you feel 'high'.

Thread on Tramadol. Kindly read and share. Very insightful

Hi Guys!! This account is run by psychiatrists in Ghana with the goals of mental health education, advocacy & solutions.

Addressing the problem of #tramadol and other addictions requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders... from the government, to the healthcare system, to you and me. #endtramadolAbuse

GhPatient reposted

In addiction medicine, prevention is INDEED better than cure. Interventions to reduce the burden of #tramadol addiction include public education, tighter regulation and supervision of prescription and dispensing, better patient information.

GhPatient reposted

There is also a role for self-help groups such as Narcotics Anonymous, religious bodies etc.

GhPatient reposted

Relapse prevention involves interventions to keep the patient off the drug. These include psychological treatments, regular follow-ups and steps to identify and rectify factors contributing to the addiction. This can be done in residential rehab or on outpatient basis.

GhPatient reposted

Management of #TramadolAbuse involves 2 stages: detoxification and relapse prevention which should be supervised by a professional. Detoxification involves helping the patient through the withdrawal stage using medications, psychological treatments and admission (sometimes).

GhPatient reposted

Stopping #tramadol suddenly after a prolonged use is associated with restlessness, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, sleeplessness & intense craving for the drug. This is called a Withdrawal Syndrome, and the unpleasant nature prevents people from quitting the drug.

GhPatient reposted

The dangers of #TramadolAbuse are many and include seizures with brain damage, kidney damage, breathing difficulties, coma and death. There's also the negative impact on valued relationships, finances, academics & career.

GhPatient reposted

There are various ways in which a person can become addicted: -Experimentation with street drug -Misuse of prescription drugs -Poor prescription practices and inadequate patient information

GhPatient reposted

#Tramadol and other addictions are therefore medical issues. Even though poor judgement and irresponsibility can get a person into substance abuse, once addicted, it becomes a medical problem and must be addressed as such.

GhPatient reposted

This is because #tramadol causes changes in brain structure and function which makes the drug to essentially become more important than food, love, work etc. Effectively re-wiring one's brain to want more and more of it...like a virus!

GhPatient reposted

#Tramadol, like other opioid drugs, has a high potential for addiction. Persistent/excessive use (more than a few weeks) leads to a need for increased amounts and frequency of drug use.

GhPatient reposted

However, #tramadol is usually abused for its other properties which include: euphoria (making you feel 'high'), delayed orgasm/ejaculation (thus increasing sexual performance), reduced perception of fatigue (giving you 'energy' to work for long periods)

GhPatient reposted

Medically, #tramadol is recommended for and can be used safely and effectively in the relief of moderate-to-severe pain which may be experienced after surgery, in cancer, sickle cell crisis etc.

GhPatient reposted

#Tramadol (tramol/ultram/ 'red', 'white') is a pain killer which works just like endorphins.
