Halton Families for Inclusive Neighbourhood Schools - We want our school board to consider what is best for ALL children, not just those in the optional program

When people start to think about what is #bestforallkids and not just their own, they are able to come up with real, workable solutions.
Let them set an everybody or nobody policy. Then I'm in. FI is not about French. It is about giving some advantages over others.
I believe everybody values education. I don't believe some children should get a private education within a public system. I believe in equality. If you can't deliver a program to everybody nobody should get it.
It also eliminates bussing for French. $$$$
It's the best way. To eliminate French as a streaming devise all kids need to be in the same program.
THIS. For all the reasons. French Immersion swallows neighborhood #schools, is not inclusive of #students w/ special ed needs, hires teachers for language not teaching talent, & is polite & public form of informal streaming. #onted
The demand for specialty programs isn't going away. What if we elminated all specialty programs? Would all schools be the same? How would that affect the students?
Most importantly, what are the unintended consequences to the solution? Wouldn't these parents just look for something else to gain an edge for their kids?
What if we only put specialty programs in areas of low income and education? Would parents still send their kids to these programs? If they do, would a "rising tide lift all boats"?
FI and other (especially paid) specialty programs contributes to the gap between rich and poor. It reinforces the cycle of "class reproducing itself." Can we leverage this to bring people closer? To make education "the great equalizer"? #EdChat
Parents are always going to look for an edge for their children, to want what's best for them. If it's not FI it'll be something else. The issues brought up by Andrew can be applied to specialty programs as well.
When everybody is in Ex French it removes the streaming component.

Or just get rid of it. I favor Extended French for All. There are other priorities. FI has become a streaming devise. Social class segregation.
FI is not the only streaming program but it is the biggest and therefore the worst. The class based streaming is very damaging to the system. In my opinion FI does not pass a cost-benefit analysis.
Can we get an "AMEN"?! 🙌 (We've said this for years!) Assuming, of course, that learning French is the main focus...
I am (was) a FI teacher for most of my 32 years as a teacher plus 10 as an OT or more. I have come to believe that one rich French program might be an option. Really, the difference is only #of hours
But we keep hearing how successful FI is so surely there's an over abundance of qualified grads➡️teachers?!😱 Wait - there's not? Shocker🙄
