Do you have a Shared Parental Leave Policy ? Remember that both parents are now eligible to use parental leave after the birth of a child (although limits do apply) #HRTipoftheday
If you have an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) encourage your staff to use it, they can offer much more than just a helpline for staff who are stressed. #HRTipoftheday
Appraisals are no use if they are only looked at once a year. They should be living, working documents that are regularly revisited and reviewed. #HRTipoftheday
Lead by example. Sending 4am e-mails is not a way of demonstrating your leadership. Stopping work at 6pm is.... #HRTipoftheday
Really encourage your staff to have a decent work/life balance....don't just pay lip service to it. #HRTipoftheday
How do you measure your staff performance ? Sometimes you have to look beyond just the numbers... #HRTipoftheday
You have the right as an employer to expect your staff to give their all during the working day, but respect that they also have a right to downtime and family time. Don’t send e- ails outside their working hours and expect a response #HRTipoftheday
GDPR is coming....don’t wait till May to wonder what you need to do. Start by looking at where all your employee data is stored and who has access to it. #HRTipoftheday
Typically, the return after the Christmas break is when a lot of unhappy staff start to look for a new job. Check in with your team on a regular basis, make sure they know they can come to you with issues and hopefully this seasonal exodus won’t affect you. #HRTipoftheday
If you have a meeting scheduled with your staff, make sure wherever possible to keep it - treat it with the same importance as you would a client meeting. It’s important to your staff, it needs to be the same for you #HRTipoftheday
Give your staff details of the appraisal process and paperwork ahead of time, allow them time to prepare fully #HRTipoftheday
January is typically the time when businesses look to start appraisals, its important that these are planned out with staff and not just thrown at them with no time to prepare. A lot of staff are wary of appraisals, don’t make it harder for them #HRTipoftheday

An effective induction is such an important of your employee's relationship with the business. Making them feel welcome and wanted from day one will go a long way to building a strong working relationship. #HRTipoftheday
Make sure that boundaries are set before you start to employ staff, it's far easier to know from the outset what is and isn't part of your business practice than to start to introduce things when you have staff in place. #HRTipoftheday
What do you do if snow stops staff getting to work ? Do staff know what their options are before it happens. Can they work from home, take holiday, make the time back ? If plans are already in place, there should be no need for snow to stop work. #HRTipoftheday
If staff are refused holidays over the christmas period due to all the allocation being taken, there may be a temptation to take a day or so off sick....its important that staff are aware that if holiday requests are turned down they are expected to attend work
Make sure you plan for lower staff levels over the Christmas period, holiday entitlement will be fully taken and there is a higher risk of staff being sick due to colds, flu etc #HRTipoftheday
Remember, a christmas party is still 'work' and and as an employer you are liable for your employees behaviour during the 'course of employment'....make your staff aware of what is and isn's accaepable behaviors prior to the event. #HRTipoftheday #YesIamtheGrinch
Don't file appraisals away for a year and forget about them. They should be reviewed and referred to on a regular basis. #HRTipoftheday
