"In Drupal, they have a bunch of pre-worded nudges that you can copy and paste if someone’s doing a particular behavior, to just say, like, ‘Hey, let’s deescalate this,’ to try and bring things back before they get too far, said Cheesley" thenewstack.io/hacks-to-help-…

Hacks to Help Open Source Leadership Support Inclusion
We can automate part of open source community management — like we do with technology itself, to reuse models and metrics for success. Here are some ideas. #opensource #DEI
"The cognitive walkthrough is an evaluation methodology that focuses on ease of learning. [...] where users must (or prefer) to master a new application or function by learning through exploration." colorado.edu/ics/sites/defa…
"Not everything you learn in private app contexts is applicable to open source, but learnings from open source will almost always be applicable to private apps." nshki.com/open-source-ch…
What is the most mysterious part of open source that you wish you knew more about? 🧙♀️🔮🪄
[cw: death] "An explicit, publicly announced, scheduled sunsetting of a project or maintainer departure is better because it gives everyone else a better chance to make and execute plans to take care of their own needs." docs.oscollective.org/guides/handlin…
Just because you've found a problem worth fixing doesn't mean you've found an implementation worth merging.
"Most evenings after I've made dinner and spent time with the wife and kids, I sit down and knock out 2,000 words on my fifth novel and like the four abominations that preceded, it will sit in my Pile of Shame, never to be seen by another human being." codementor.io/@ezekielbuchhe…
Ever see a problem and feel like someone else could handle it better? Pretend you're the only person in the world who can help. 🚨 Break out of the "bystander effect" and into action to achieve your open source goals. 🚨
It’s much easier to fix a bug than to get a feature merged. 🪲 Finding a regression report with an attached reproduction is the fastest way to turn someone else’s issue into your PR. 🏎💨
Did you know you can follow a single issue? Click "subscribe" to be notified of new comments. You can use this to follow along and learn more without having to make a public comment.

"Contributing to open source" isn't an achievable or actionable task. It's a goal. Break down large unbound tasks into smaller ones. Then you'll realize your impossible path is just a series of solvable puzzles. 🧩
“Run your company codebase like open source” means spending all of your dev time trying to get the attention of a maintainer.
Flexibility is a virtue in code and forearms
“The most damaging phrase in the language is: `It's always been done that way.'” - Grace Hopper, Inventor of the first compiler
"Additionally, Homebrew’s MIT open source license, like almost all open source licenses, clearly states that Homebrew provides no promises of support, warranties or guarantees that the software will work as expected." mikemcquaid.com/entitlement-in…
Don't write checks your PRs can't cash. 💸 If you make a comment "claiming" an issue to fix and then disappear, you might be blocking someone else from helping.
"If you’ve tried before and failed, learn how to floss one tooth and transition from looking for issues tagged with good for beginners to finding your own beginner actions." howtoopensource.dev
Think that to be successful in open source, you've got to 'try harder?' Learn how successful contributors use systems like "floss one tooth" to contribute without relying on willpower.
"money donations from corporate sponsors are one of many ways to get resources (also consider free services from platforms, selling tickets to convenings, etc.)" docs.oscollective.org/guides/recruit…
You are the future of technology. Your powers can influence the world for the better. But better for whom? "The “Industrial Revolution” in the Home: Household Technology and Social Change in the 20th Century xroads.virginia.edu/~DRBR/r_uth.ht…
