Back to reality! On Monday, I was 5,000' higher on that mountain, surrounded by a forest coated in hoar frost. Once we were back in Albuquerque, it was 25 degrees warmer with no wind chill. The second image is my awesome "new" vintage Ultimate Direction Scott Jurek 2.0 vest.
For my daughter’s 21st birthday, we took the Sandia Peak Tramway from 6,659’ up to 10,378’ and then hiked north on the Crest Trail up to 10,574’. Amazing conditions, and then clearing skies to see the view to the east during lunch!
A short run today to save my legs for a hike on the crest of that mountain (10,600') with my daughter Grace tomorrow!
I felt as beat up when I started my run as the shoes someone left on that rock. The view and the crystal clear day kept me going!
Running east from my house, starting at about three-quarters of a mile into the run, there is a short stretch with high tension wires. I don't often take a picture here, but I do like the symmetry.
Sandhill cranes migrate to New Mexico from Canada, Alaska, and Siberia. I saw 13 foraging in a field before they later fly south and overnight in Bosque del Apache. That was before I even go to do the mid-week hike with my daughter in the Rio Grande Bosque!
One of the many great things about New Mexico is that you can live near a mountain that will have snow on it and still be running in shorts below 6,000'. We'll see if there is some white on the Sandias over the weekend!
My first workout with the Runna 5K coaching plan. I earned a 2-week free trial of Runna Premium by completing a Runna Challenge on Strava. With the premium plan, I can also offer you a 2-week free trial. Get Runna in the app stores and use Code RUNNAW66BC5Z to get it!
I love running in the Rio Grande Valley, but when I run east from home, I always have views of the ever-changing Sandia Mountains in all of their splendor.
Nice little adventure in the Rio Grande bosque this morning. There was plenty of water in the river, the ditch was running clear again, the leaves are changing, and I looped back along the Paseo del Bosque Trail.
Mid-week hike with my daughter Grace, with almost 500' of elevation gain, and temperatures 10 degrees above normal. I included a photo from my run on November 5th, 2024, for comparison!
If you are a Breaking Bad fan, you will recognize the John Robert Dam, where Ed the Disappearer picked up people in his van. I passed in front of it and then ran up and over it to run east into the Sandia Mountain foothills.
I am so blessed to live in Albuquerque and to be able to see the Sandia Mountains every time that I look east!
It felt challenging during the 572' of elevation gain in the first half of the hike with my daughter this morning, but then it was all downhill with Mt. Taylor in the distance all of the way back!
The beautiful 10,000'+ Sandia Mountains to the east and the beautiful 10,000'+ Mt. Taylor to the west, about 60 miles away.
Those Three Sisters Volcanoes here in Albuquerque actually have two other sisters to their right. They can't help it if they didn't grow as big!
My malaise and fatigue may have been caused by low Vitamin D. A couple of days of 10,000 IU D3, and I felt almost like new. Most of this was a hike, but I finished with a run!
I started out my hike checking out the graffiti in one of the tunnels leading to the Sandia Mountain foothills. It only got better from there!
