Our study in @BJGPjournal evaluates the role of faecal calprotectin (FC) in older adults. FC testing could act as a rule-out test providing reassurance of a low likelihood of significant pathology in older adults with lower GI symptoms and a negative FIT. bjgp.org/content/early/…

The annual projected uplifts in NHS GP budgets in England of around 1.4% for the next two years are too low given the pressures facing primary care teams. Increases at this level will not be adequate to meet the rising demand for primary care services. pulsetoday.co.uk/news/contract/…

It’s very disappointing to see the government proposing to tax universities on their income from overseas student fees. The UK’s universities are facing major challenges and this measure will worsen their finances; as well as making the UK less attractive to foreign students.

Central NHS diktats often push general practices toward rigid, one-size-fits-all approaches even when they don’t always suit local circumstances. We need far more flexibility so that NHS general practices can adapt their services to the needs of the diverse groups they serve.

One thing that stayed the same after change in government in 2024 is the Panglossian approach of NHS England and DHSC’s Press Offices. No matter how bad the news, they always remain unwaveringly optimistic instead of adopting an “honesty is sometimes the best policy” approach.
