Our study in @BJGPjournal evaluates the role of faecal calprotectin (FC) in older adults. FC testing could act as a rule-out test providing reassurance of a low likelihood of significant pathology in older adults with lower GI symptoms and a negative FIT. bjgp.org/content/early/…

It’s very disappointing to see the government proposing to tax universities on their income from overseas student fees. The UK’s universities are facing major challenges and this measure will worsen their finances; as well as making the UK less attractive to foreign students.

Central NHS diktats often push general practices toward rigid, one-size-fits-all approaches even when they don’t always suit local circumstances. We need far more flexibility so that NHS general practices can adapt their services to the needs of the diverse groups they serve.
NHS digital innovations such as the introduction of triage forms benefit many patients but can also create unnecessary barriers, potentially leading to delayed care and increased stress for people from vulnerable groups with limited digital literacy. pulsetoday.co.uk/news/clinical-…

One thing that stayed the same after change in government in 2024 is the Panglossian approach of NHS England and DHSC’s Press Offices. No matter how bad the news, they always remain unwaveringly optimistic instead of adopting an “honesty is sometimes the best policy” approach.

There are concerns that the government may divert enhanced services funding away from general practices to fund new NHS neighbourhood teams. This would destabilise general practices financially; a sector of the NHS that has successfully contained costs and increased productivity.
