The news is out! I'm thrilled to share that I rediscovered eight 17th-century paper objects made by schoolgirls when @SuttonHouseNT was one of Hackney's many female academies. These paper cuts are an extremely rare example of an art form written about by Hannah Woolley (1/2)
Best thing ever from the @V_and_A stores today: on the front of Margret Mason’s 1660 sampler are clothed “boxer” figures (little men holding gifts, acorns here). Turn the sampler over and the men look much the same but are completely naked!

Last year I IDed a third c. 1650-75 embroidered cabinet made at the Perwich school, one of 17th-c. Hackney's major girls' schools. This example is owned by Doncaster Heritage. The others are in LACMA & the Fitzwilliam. My article about the find is in this issue of Hackney History

Briefly back on this app to say I cannot wait to speak with my friend @ericanela about Quakerism’s surprising early years! Expect everything from radicalism to Quakers getting naked (!) from Erica, and some shockingly decorative needlework from me!

🎉 We’re delighted to unveil the speakers for the inaugural Stuart History Festival. It’s going to be a celebration of (what we believe is) the most dramatic, dazzling, and divisive period in British history! 📅 5-6 July, The Old Palace, Worcester .... (Post 1 of 2)

There's a new episode of @sewwhatpodcast out today and it's all about one of my favourite embroiderers of all time, Lorina Bulwer. Give it a listen here: buzzsprout.com/1075825/episod…

There's a new episode of Sew What? and it's an interview with Ruth Battersby, Senior Curator of Costume and Textiles at Norfolk Museums Service, about the powerful, angry, and subversive embroidery of Lorina Bulwer. Listen on your fave podcast app or here: buzzsprout.com/1075825/episod…

There’s a delightful new sampler exhibition up at the Quaker Tapestry Museum, called “Sampled Styles.” Would definitely recommend checking it out if you’re in or near Kendal anytime soon! Was great to visit the exhibition today and to give a little talk about samplers

I got to interview the daughter of Major A.T. Casdagli for @sewwhatpodcast and it was a dream come true! I LOVE the subversive stitching of Casdagli, so what an honour it was to talk about his work with Alexis Penny. Check out our interview here: buzzsprout.com/1075825/episod…

There's a new episode out today and it's my dream interview! It's a chat with Alexis Penny Casdagli, daughter of Major A.T. Casdagli, famous for his F*CK HITLER sampler. Check out the interview on your fave podcast app or here: buzzsprout.com/1075825/episod…

On 27 March I'll be giving a talk at @HackneyMuseum about needlework and other art made by girls at Hackney's female academies in the 17th century. I'll be talking about everything from Susanna Perwich's cabinet at @LACMA to my @SuttonHouseNT rediscovery. I hope to see you there!

Major A.T. Casdagli’s embroideries made during his time in four German POW camps in WWII are some of my favourite pieces of needlework from the 20th century. Now his entire wartime diary is available online as a free pdf. Check out my post about it here: instagram.com/p/DHVvcfRsWQ4/…
Popping in to this website to say this wee casket is SUCH a joy. Tiny little treasure! The stripy clothes are especially delightful
Currently in the shop is this lovely casket in great condition. This small casket and two accompanying samplers were worked by a girl with the initials ‘RT’ in the 1650s. It has a drop down front and its exterior illustrates a courting couple and a variety of Biblical narratives

There's a new @sewwhatpodcast out today and it's truly a celebration of and reflection on the importance of textiles. Go check it out here: buzzsprout.com/1075825/episod…!
