The degree system (which started in the Middle Ages) has always been a flawed and prohibitively expensive concept. All along we should have had education and hiring based on skills acquisition, not a four-year process of completed coursework.
The degree requirement in hiring has become a human rights issue. People have a fundamental human right to enter the world of work without having to pay an expensive and time-consuming fee. That is what the degree system has become @byron_auguste pbs.org/newshour/show/…

"I could use our own university system as a case study in how political power often wins out over scientific knowledge" And so many of us could unfortunately do the same. Opinion | Why I Quit chronicle.com/article/why-i-…
One problem: "I interviewed Joe Fuller of Harvard Business School for a story titled, “Demanding a Bachelor’s Degree for a Middle-Skill Job Is Just Plain Dumb." But this presumes it is OK for "high skill" jobs. Maintaining degrees for any jobs will just lead to more debt.
Bravo to @petercoy for this piece, and to @byron_auguste for his comments. We need to end the use of the degree system in hiring and turn job credentialing over to trusted third-party sources. @KiranKodithala @futurexhighered @rystowers nytimes.com/2021/10/18/opi…

So we have @NelsonSchwartz and @coralmerfi of the @nytimes, also known as the public relations arm of Higher Ed, Inc. here to tell us about the economic "premium" that supposedly comes with clutching a college sheepskin. nytimes.com/2021/10/08/bus…
This is definitely anger-making. I don't understand why faculty senates and other faculty orgs (like AAUP) aren't organizing to unilaterally move classes online. In many places, teaching in person is unsafe!
5 weeks back in person with students = I have COVID. All the isolation, all my efforts for the past 18 months are for naught. I spent every holiday alone last year, the depression was awful. All the suffering to try to avoid COVID, and here I am. Alone, very sick, and very angry
UGA: we encourage you to wear a mask. We also encourage you not to wear a mask if you don’t feel like it.
"Without input from any of the students"! Another "student-centric" university, I presume!
Alan Dorsey, the dean of Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, warned Professor Joseph Fu that mandating masks in the classroom or transitioning to online instruction would be “grounds for disciplinary action.” This is a letter from Fu's students. redandblack.com/opinion/guest-…
