Humanity will not heal as long as we define success as superiority over others. Societies engendering winners and losers continue to be endlessly plagued by contempt and anguish. “Knowing” series, Book 1. Visit Knowing tab of site in profile. Follow timeline for excerpts. #quote
I value student comments, but it's rare that there's a "consensus" about what works/doesn't work. I have a good sense about what was effective or not; comments usually help me to fill out the user experience side of what I'm already well aware of one way or the other.
Speaker Johnson has an odd epistemology.
Speaker Mike Johnson: "We all know, intuitively, that a lot of illegals are voting in federal elections. But it's not been something that's easily provable. We don't have that number." Sounds legit.
A 35, a 5.09 weighted GPA, and a #1 class rank is not sufficient to be admitted to get into Ivies. This is just standard online resentment harvesting for people who don't know any better.
This is how white privilege works in nowadays DEI society. They’re literally mocking you.
The end result: much less outside writing assigned, more focus on in-class exams; difficulty of course goes up (focus on exam content), but student writing gets worse.
Reddit is flooded with students asking various subreddits how to deal with professors accusing them of generative AI use in their writing during this finals period. Professors are wondering how to deal with obvious generative AI use in their grading. We broke something.
So much demagoguery and theater, so little time.

You'd think @FrankLuntz knew that there were three sides represented in this conflict, but his poll seems oblivious to this and one side simply disappears from consideration. I wonder why that is.
80% of Americans favor Israel in the Gaza war, while 20% say they favor Hamas. Israel vs. Hamas support by age group: • 65+: 93% v. 7% • 55-65: 91% v. 9% • 45-54: 85% v. 15% • 35-44: 75% v. 25% • 25-34: 64% v. 36% • 18-24: 57% v. 43% thehill.com/policy/interna…
Ross blames protests on left-wing classes like "Contemporary Civilization" at Columbia. Read the piece, hit the link for the course, and see if you think the year-long course is excessively liberal. Ross is so, so tired as a writer. nytimes.com/2024/04/27/opi…
Today my Daoism class finished the Zhuangzi (Inner Chapters) and my Public Seminar class finished a semester-long reading of Aurelius' Meditations. What wonderful books - I appreciate the rich, deep, and meaningful discussions they generate. Props and thanks, my ancient brothers.
Many of my students are baffled by this approach (my advisor called it the "principle of respect"), because they've internalized the belief that the point of argument is winning, not learning or a joint pursuit of the truth.
After Frans de Waal and Daniel Kahneman, another huge loss for the philosophical psychology community worldwide. Daniel Dennett has been one of the most influential philosophers of his time and his legacy is destined to continue far into the future.
My students are having a hard time functioning today; Taylor dropped a double album last night, they haven't had time to hear it all, and it has songs about Travis on it. Trying to cover content today is futile.
Dennett, R.I.P.
Dennett is a smart guy but I'm not going to ask him for advice on where to hang pictures or install shelves.
Gave talk to Philosophy Club on applying Daoist thinking to reduce stress, got rejected again from NYC marathon lottery, ran 6 miles, learned more geometry (tutoring kid #2), got a Victory Royale in Fortnite. Maybe I'll just pack it in and go to bed now.

Zhuangzi on FAFO: "If you play around near Archer Yi's target, lurking near the bulls-eye, it is only normal to get hit. If you manage to escape getting hit, it's just fate, good luck."
Is there a setting on Twitter that I can turn on so that I no longer see anything by or about Bill Ackman?
