First leg of the ICONA-PNG expedition at the CO2 vents in Ambitle Island, Tutum Bay. A great team on board the R/V Antea. Sadly, warming has already affected the reef from my last cruise in 2019 but an amazing reef is still there. @icona_research @twofrontiers @UMREntropie

Despite a global IT outage, Category 4 typhoon, and several false starts, I was thankful to get back to Iriomote-jima, Japan, working with colleagues @LabMise @LabNaruse to deploy @InsideNatGeo supported deep sea cameras and @wilderlab supported #eDNA on #mesophotic coral reefs.
While our primary focus of the mission was to audit biodiversity across the marine “Tree of Life” in these rarely surveyed mesophotic ecosystems, we were not expecting to see such extensive coral bleaching due to elevated water temperatures well below 50 metres depth!!! 😟
- I got to spend some time with colleagues/friends from my Japanese days that I had not seen in almost 2 years, among which my mentor @JDReimer, and other @LabMisemembers, Fabian Gösser and @ayakapaull. (flexing MISE's new tshirt #thisishowMISErolls)

Super stoked to be recognized as an ICRS Fellow by @ICRSCoralReefs. Ready to rock and roll the 2nd half of my career and try to do what I can to protect/conserve/help reefs and their biodiversity, and get the word out! #thisishowMISErolls
On our 4th day on board the R/V KAIMEI, with state of the art facilities (not to mention great food 😉). The search for deep-sea antipatharians and zoantharians in the SE Japan continues! 🪸
New paper out: first attempts at functional diversity on #softcorals and #Zoanthus/Palythoa. Massive congrats to the whole team and particularly for sticking with it. Great collab with Leeds U. #thisishowMISErolls @MariaBeger link.springer.com/article/10.100…
