Notes require experimenting, so we're all getting it wrong until we finally figure out what works.
Your notes don't need to be pretty. Mental connections are often very messy, so by focusing on aesthetics your note-taking actually becomes very restricted and linear.
Having an external monitor in portrait mode is a blessing for reading pdfs.
What doesn't get tracked doesn't get improved.
These are all indications of course, but it's all you can work with at the beginning and it's certainly better than picking up a book at random. The expectation is that as one progresses they have a better idea of what to read and whose opinions to value.
Wa alaykumus Salam, when you're stepping into a field, I think the best thing you can do is get book recommendations - whether it's an authority in the field, a teacher, or general acceptance of the book as a primer.
