Pub Sign of the Week: The Zetland, Southport When pub signs were good. I reckon the bloke on the right has spotted a pub. After a few days at sea, surely a welcome sight. The pillaging can wait. #PubSignThursday
Cambridge United 3-0 Chester. FA Cup 1R. Att: 4,329 (away 1,231) A miserable afternoon at the Abbey Stadium. Absolutely nothing to cheer for the brilliant travelling support. Best bit was the impeccably observed remembrance tribute.
Pub Sign of the Week: Pendle Witch, Sabden, Lancashire A nod to Halloween though it means nothing to my generation other than it being a largely US imported commercial opportunity exploited by the supermarkets. Make Guy Fawkes Night (and pub signs) great again. #PubSignThursday
Pub Sign of the Week: General Eliott, Croft, Cheshire Named after a Scots born 18C British army officer most famous for his command during the siege of Gibraltar by France and Spain. A teetotaller who died from drinking too much mineral water (so says Wiki). #PubSignThursday
The window cleaner is due today. I've had to evict my gorgeous Cross Orbweaver from outside the kitchen to spare her from the squeegee or a tsunami of suds. I feel like an utter bastard. She's been patiently there in her wondrous web for weeks. What a shit start to Monday.
Pub Sign of the Week: The Travelling Man, West Boldon A genial looking chap. I wonder if he's on a mission to tick off al the pubs in Tyne & Wear? #PubSignThursday
Willington Hall, Willington. Set in formal gardens and Cheshire countryside, primarily a boutique hotel and wedding, dining, conference venue but still got a welcoming public bar. Excellent beer of very local provenance. Half expected Fawlty Tower's Major Gowen to walk in!
Painting of the Week: "In A Convent Garden" - George Dunlop Leslie (c1857-70) The abbess arrives with news of the FA Cup 4th QR draw. Harriet knew she should have been praying for her mortal soul but secretly she’d been asking God for Chester to get Morecambe away.
Pub Sign of the Week: Pit Laddie, Spennymoor, Co. Durham. Doesn't look he's happy with his life down the mines which is getting in the way of aspirations to be a professional ballet dancer. #PubSignThursday
Named after the primary protagonists in the film African Queen, the pub cats Rosie and Charlie were on good form in the Albion last night.
Pub Sign of the Week: The Alma, Bolton. One of many pubs named after the Battle of the Alma in the Crimean War which took place on 20th September 1854. Fought near the River Alma, it resulted in lots of dead but was judged an Allied victory worth celebrating. #PubSignThursday
Griffin, Heaton Mersey Another splendid Joe Holt's boozer - unsurprisingly CAMRA Heritage Pub listed. Only customer in there so had a host of simply furnished rooms to choose from. The pint of Bitter was superb.
Stalybridge Celtic 1-2 Chester - FA Cup 2QR. Att: 1143 First Seals away game of the season for part-timer me. I do like Bower Fold. Excellent ground good enough to grace the football league. Scenic too. Tight game but two classy finishes ensure our place in the hat for Monday.
Sadly such a rare event these days but when it happens you've got to make the most of it.
Pub Sign of the Week: The Railway, Bognor. It's well over five years since I got further south than Oxford let alone London. And as for Bognor, I've never been there. Perhaps I should if this is what the train and rail infrastructure looks like in Sussex. #PubSignThursday
Clouded Yellow butterfly at Point Lynas, #Anglesey last Friday - one of several nectaring on Fleabane. Chuffed to bits. Never seen one in the UK before.
Pub Sign of the Week: The Rigger, Elton. So-named due to its proximity to Stanlow oil refinery. Like so many purpose-built estate pubs it is currently boarded up and forlorn. Central location though. Still potential to be a community hub of the future! #PubSignThursday
Birch Hall Inn, Beck Hole. Been top of my CAMRA Heritage pub bucket list for such a long time but finally conquered and didn't disappoint. A timeless, rural gem with adjacent sweet shop hidden deep down in the Murk Esk Valley of the North Yorkshire Moors.
