The talk about Starmer potentially facing a leadership challenge is entirely down to Keir Starmer. I spent over a decade dreaming of the return of a Labour government, and it’s been a total disaster - and judging by the pre-Budget briefings it’s only going to get worse.

It is objectively very funny that a few months after the Tories are out of power the Tories have suddenly discovered all the bad effects of Tory policy choices.

Rape cases are now being scheduled as far off as 2027. Justice delayed is justice denied. This is the unvarnished truth about what’s happening👇

Labour has obviously worded the manifesto very carefully and you can argue the right and wrongs of that. But equally feels like the IFS has taken a bizarre position saying it’s a ‘straightforward manifesto breach’ and is now furiously trying to find a way to justify that claim.

Lots of questions about Employer NICs today. They are a tax on the earnings of working people. In the long run, expect the majority of a rise in employer NICs to be passed on to workers in the form of lower wages.

Need to see the detail, but I think Rachel Reeves has grounds to be cross. The in-year funding pressures do genuinely appear to be greater than could be discerned from outside. The £9bn contingency ‘reserve’ has seemingly been spent several times over. It’s a mess.

I think history will remember Joe Biden very kindly. Stopped Trump in 2020, delivered some great things as President and is now bowing out to allow the country the best chance of avoiding a second Trump Presidency.

It actually took four days but great news - gov.uk/government/pub…

Day 1 priority for a Labour government should be getting onshore wind in England moving again. The lowest of low hanging growth fruits.

Your periodic reminder that England, a windswept nation with more potential for onshore wind power than almost anywhere else in the world (other than Scotland), banned new onshore wind farms in 2017.

A jaw-dropping line from this @olivershah piece: “In November, Wilko secured a financial lifeline by selling its distribution centre in Worksop to the logistics giant DHL for £48 million. DHL flipped it for a £40 million profit barely two months later.” thetimes.co.uk/article/little…

“The culture war has a function, and that function is to mask the real shift of economic power toward the rich.” - @BrankoMilan

Talking about freedom, sat in Margaret Thatcher’s old Rover. Earlier I spoke to @Telegraph about how important cars are for families to live their lives. It’s something anti-motorist Labour just don’t seem to get. And it’s why I’m reviewing anti-car schemes across the country.

Another reminder of the wonderful reporting @BBCSteveR and the BBC team in Russia are doing.

Moscow casts the West as Russia’s enemy. But do Russians really believe that? In Yaroslavl I gauge the strength of anti-Western feeling & the mood outside Moscow more than 15 months after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Camera @AntonChicherov Producer @LizaShuvalova

It’s striking how little the Conservative 2010-Present Government has achieved. Brexit is presumably the flagship achievement but what else? It’s strange for a government to be in power for so long but to actually not be that transformational for the country.

Surely the answer to the uninsured deposits at Silicon Valley Bank (both US and UK) is that anyone who needs liquidity can have it and in exchange for the money the Government gets equity stakes? Win/win surely?

The Met has a awful culture at the moment - they get things wrong and have a problem with the truth. Anyone can see the protester was not moved away from the gates to facilitate access - if that was the goal it would’ve taken one officer to ask the protester to move two yards.

This is brilliant journalism and shines a light on the really deep problems facing the NHS at the moment.
