Sluggards are very reasonable people. They have no shortage of “reasons” for the things they leave undone: “The sluggard says, ‘There is a lion outside! I shall be killed in the streets!’” (Prov. 22:13)
This is perhaps the single most important truth we need to grasp: our own sin. Not the sins of others. Our own. The line between good and evil doesn’t run between class or ethnicity, wealth or poverty, male or female. It runs straight down the middle of every human heart.
Cultural change begins with repentance. It begins with a recognition of our own guilt. Any attempt at reformation that ignores this is doomed to fail. Repentance is the way, because repentance leads to Christ.
Scripture makes a distinction between the poor and the sluggard. The poor should rightly be the objects of mercy; sluggards should reap the hard consequences of their laziness. Our culture confuses the two. But they are not the same.
As you come to the end of a tiring work day, remember that (1) God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins (1 Jn. 1:9), and (2) “In all toil there is profit” (Prov. 14:23). In the Lord your labour is not in vain (1 Cor. 15:58).
