Blocking a candidate who outpolls the Labour Party among Reform and Green voters — and is more popular than the party itself in Manchester — in a Manchester by-election where Reform and the Greens are the main challengers, is not a smart move.
The thing is, if you took factional glasses off, Andy Burnham would objectively be Labour's best bet at winning back Green and Reform voters. The people running Labour would rather burn the party to the ground than let a softly progressive politician run it.
