You really do start to question the boundary commissions judgement in creating Gorton and Denton - obviously all seats have some variation in them but in this case there are two wildly different sections that are looking for different things from an MP.

Had a go at estimating the Gorton & Denton vote based on census data (downloaded via Digimap) Too granular to be meaningful, but the east/west divide is def real For illustrative purposes — what a close three way tie could look like

Hey, remember when Peter Mandelson was deemed fit to be our ambassador to the United States, but candidates for Parliament were blocked from being on a shortlist because they had liked tweets from Nicola Sturgeon saying she had recovered from Covid. The state of our politics.

If Keir Starmer has made the Labour Party so unpopular that it would lose the Manchester mayoralty to Reform, that is an argument for removing him as soon as possible, not for blocking any would-be challengers.

Wake up boys and girls. It would have made no sense to let Burnham run. Sure, he might have won the by-election, but at cost of donating the Mayoralty to Reform and months of turmoil in the Labour Party. He should have known that without having to be told.

The people who broke the country are defecting to Reform & telling us that it’s broken.

Blocking a candidate who outpolls the Labour Party among Reform and Green voters — and is more popular than the party itself in Manchester — in a Manchester by-election where Reform and the Greens are the main challengers, is not a smart move.

The thing is, if you took factional glasses off, Andy Burnham would objectively be Labour's best bet at winning back Green and Reform voters. The people running Labour would rather burn the party to the ground than let a softly progressive politician run it.

Asked several NEC members what the chance is of Burnham getting selected to fight a by-election. All said zero.

Giving a gong to an extremely dimwitted reactionary transphobe, whose only claim to fame was swimming up & down in a straight line, coming second at the Olympics nearly 50 years ago, and doing Shredded Wheat ads. Another excellent example of why the House of Lords must go.

Not epic. A woman with 13 million followers who could afford, in every sense of the word, to take the moral high ground instead decides to do this. It’s so Trumpian. Why can’t we all behave better?

People can have their views on Chagos. But the fact is successive US administrations - both Biden's and Trump's - took the view the deal was in the US's strategic and national security interests. The fact Trump has now thrown his toys out of the pram doesn't change that.

Robert Jenrick can attempt to rationalise it as much as he likes. The reality is if he thought it would get him closer to Downing Street he’d have been standing next to Zack Polanski this afternoon.
