Wild Daffodils growing on a wayside bank on a rather grey morning in Gascony. A drake Mandarin Duck which alighted to feed with other wildfowl beside a large local reservoir was a surprise.

Distant shot of an interesting Common Gull - predominantly yellow bill and olive-green legs - on Gorleston beach, Norfolk on Tuesday afternoon. Has anyone else note the paucity of reports of 'white-winged' gulls nation-wide since the onset of wintry weather?

A somewhat grainy shot of the Black-winged Kite as it left its tree-top perch earlier today. It favoured the sheltered south side of a small wood about 500 yards N of Ludham bridge, N.E. Norfolk.

The parish church at Reedham, Norfolk is believed to be built on the site of, and certainly includes the fabric of, a fortified 'pharos'. This edifice permitted a beacon to be lit to warn of marauding Teutons during the last years of the Roman Empire.

Zac Goldsmith has reported from the climate summit that, at v short notice, the UK government has withdrawn from a scheme designed to compensate Brazilian farmers if they commit to preserving the natural forest. Arguably more significant news than a few absconding prisoners?

A bit of history is revealed in the inscription as the Lowestoft branch of the National Westminster Bank becomes another victim of the digital age. The "VR" post office (adjacent) is a splendid neo-classical building.

Glimpses from a recent trip to Panama principally for butterflies: Black-bellied Anteros (or 'Jewelmark'); Green-celled Cattleheart; a distant view of Panama City's financial quarter; fem. Collared Trogon which reaches the limit of its range on the central ridge.

The 1cy 'Orange-legged Hobby' on agricultural land across the R. Bure from Bure Park, Great Yarmouth at 1730hrs - about 20 mins before the main gates were locked. With reduced wind speed the falcon roamed more widely during the afternoon, and was occasionally mobbed by kestrel.

The butterfly year is not yet over: a Comma in coastal Suffolk. Nearby was a white butterfly with a distinctly 'mincing' flight action over 75m. Of course it didnt settle. Time to invest In a butterfly net and some old fashioned 'pillboxes'?

The female Ruddy Duck with Shovelers on Leathes Ham, Lowestoft at 1425hrs. At least 34 Gadwall present so there seems to have been an influx despite prevailing SW winds. I wondered if a Chiffchaff with a call closer to 'see-ut' than to 'hweet' was also from further East.
