Jonathan Edwards (1703-58) was a faithful pastor, preacher, theologian, missionary and college president.

The love of Christ is the love of that which is truly above all things excellent and lovely, and therefore the pleasures that result from it must be solid, real, substantial, and never-fading.

True love is fruitful. It always seeks the benefit and advantage of the beloved. And will procure it if there be opportunity. But there is no other instance of love that in this respect is to be equaled or compared with Christ's dying love.

Holiness is the beauty of the divine nature.

We must be willing that Christ should be our portion. Christ doesn't offer his benefits separate from his person.

Christ in the Gospels offers himself to us to be ours. He is ready and willing to be wholly ours with all that he is and has.

Christ's knocking at the door implies his offer is himself to us, to be ours.

Remain no longer in darkness, but come to God, the author and fountain of marvellous light.

God is a God who comforts those who are cast down.

Let those who are in darkness come to God for light.

He pours forth his goodness as plentifully as the sun pours forth his light. The whole world is beautified and supplied by his diffusive communication.

There is no true comfort to be found anywhere else but in God.

God is the Father of the light of true comfort and joy. Sorrow and grief and distress are often in Scripture called darkness, and comfort is compared to light.

Though the evil that we meet with is brought upon us by God's providence, yet we procure it ourselves.

All those good things that men attribute to themselves, or to their fellow creatures, or to natural causes, or to good fortune are indeed the mere gifts of God.

Since Christ is the essential brightness and glory of God, so he is the Light of the world.

God is a fountain of happiness, and he is the only fountain of happiness.

God communicates himself more continually than the sun. The sun turns from us and leaves a shadow, but God is without a shadow of turning.
