With respect - hate crime stats have very, very limited uses and very, very large limitations. A better set of data to examine would be the rates of criminal victimization by ... pick your power delineator. Do we (police, courts, statscan) even collect that data?

As a journalist who's worked in highly similar situations I can think of many reasons to argue in court for the release of similar records up here. (Assuming we're talking about conversations that do not involve Counsel). But I'd want a compelling reason - especially pre-trial.
The crime web allegations in this case are insane enough, but also the system &norm differences. I truly can’t imagine a Canadian jurisdiction releasing inmate calls to media via FOIP equivalents, or media even taking the position it’s in the public interest for accountability?
