Absolutely true. The best math teacher in my Chicagoland HS who won near annually "Teacher of the Year" had zero relationships with his students. He was incredible at teaching algebra and there was zero side talk outside of his instruction, a very "closed off" kind of demeanor.…
Ordered more hardcovers today. Combined with 100 or so books I already had orders on, it was a fair chunk of change. But, I'm stocked up to possibly hit $7k in con sales this month. If I make it, I think that will be a new record for me.

The problem is not teachers taking sick days or mental health days The problem is districts having no plan for these days that doesn’t burden the remaining teachers in the building
1/2 If I was in charge of a school's budget I'd look at the cost of supplying each pupil with a dummy (not smart) phone, giving it to the pupils and then introducing a smartphone ban. That then gets around the "what if I need to contact my kid in an emergency" argument but also
I mean, cars are an important tool in our society too, but I won’t hand over the keys to a 12 year old. Cell phones can be incredibly addictive, and kids/teens simply do not have the brain development to manage it.
As someone who offers a book for free that barely anyone downloads, I can tell you that I am definitely CHANGING THE WORLD. Be benefitted, society! This guy over here inventing the library in 2024.
Only a small number of book authors make significant money from book sales. This seems to suggest that most books should be freely available for download. The lost revenue for authors would be small, and the benefits to society large by comparison.
A personal thrill: Formulating a take about something that is not my business, and then deciding to not share it, and feeling the wave of relief over having not shared said take.
Apparently “kitchen” is the most common answer. I think we had ours in “the second living room” a lot of times.

I have found, talking to our personal finance teachers, that they teach all this. Kids just don’t care right now and then when they get to be adults and actually need to know the info, just want to complain instead of owning that they should have paid attention.
Once in a while I pitch “The Year Without Streaming” — I cancel all my streaming services and just do physical media, purchased or borrowed from the library — and the thought of it makes people SO MAD it makes me want to actually do it
