Then & Now: Fetter Lane, Fleet Street, London, 1910. Then a narrow, active street in the legal and commercial heart of the City. The street was a mix of old and new. Gas lamps were still common, but electric lighting was beginning to appear in shopfronts.
Charlie Chaplin's stay at The Ritz Hotel in 1921 is famous because a massive crowd greeted him, requiring 40 police officers to escort him inside. He stayed in the first-floor Regal Suite and was photographed throwing carnations to fans from a balcony.
In 1920, a Fremlin's beer depot was located on or near the site of what is now 15 Park Street, SE1, which was a granary warehouse at the time. This location was adjacent to a railway viaduct, its history as a granary suggests a role in storage and distribution.
