as I was leaving my new doctor’s office today he said, “thank you for the important work you do at the college.” I laughed & joked, “Shakespeare’s not important” & he responded, “any kind of knowledge is important.” put me in my place.

I am an exceptional teacher. I know it because of the relationships I build w/ students, my classroom management, the learning that takes place, and the JOY I personally experience in the classroom. But, I also recognize how I fail miserably at being a good teacher “on paper.”
I'm a teacher. That means I'm a guide on the side AND a sage on the stage. I'm a faciliator of learning, AND I'm a director of experiences. We're all these things at different times -- when our students need us to be.
Help me settle a bet: 👉 What year of teaching is this for you? 👉 What is your #1 goal for your first day of school with students?
A 🧵 on burnout Yesterday I learned that when people are burnt out, their amygdala enlarges. For all you non-neuroscientists, here's what that means and why it's important. 1/ #AcademicChatter @AcademicChatter @CouragePhD
I realize this is satire and so it exaggerates for the sake of humor. But, if you're in academia and your real life job situation closely resembles this? Something needs to change because this kind of thing should never become normalized. mcsweeneys.net/articles/class…
List of reasons to have a cup of tea: -You’ve received good news -You’ve received bad news -You’re thirsty -You’re tired -You’re cold -You’re under the weather -You’re bored -You need a break -To make up after an argument -Because someone else is having one -To be polite…
Must reply to this email, so it's only logical to let it haunt my inbox for several months instead, providing me with a mini-crisis every time I see it.

Academics be like "there's a lot of confusion about this concept, but it's really quite intuitive. Allow me to explain"
Going back to work after a break involves a few days of waiting to get back into the swing of things. Then eventually you remember you were never in the swing of things even before the break. There is no swing of things. The things remain unswinged.
Me: I have so much to do at work Also me: doing absolutely none of it
Me, every year at this time
Dedicated teacher alert! Not even the 2023 #NobelPrize in Physics could tear Anne L'Huillier from her students. Our new physics laureate was busy teaching a class. During a scheduled break, she heard the news. After the phone call, L'Huillier went right back to her students.
I’m playing with the frame of burnout being reached when you can no longer power yourself through anxiety because you’ve been so anxious for so long, and being driven by that anxiety gif do long, that it no longer has any motivating power over you.
