The crisis in local government funding is far from over – central government must meet the estimated £3bn gap in funding due to covid in the years ahead as basic minimum. But that will be a short term fix. (1/4)

The picture Dominic Cummings paints highlights the perils of having nearly all of our state capacity centralised in a few major Whitehall departments. When the leaders of those departments have no plan, we all have no plan, but it doesn't need to be that way.

We did it! I'm proud to be the first West Yorkshire Metro Mayor and I'm incredibly humbled and grateful for every single vote. I will fight for every single resident so everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Thank you.

The West Midlands has been hardest hit by COVID. But under a Labour Mayor, we can bring back industry, lead green Britain and champion the community spirit that got us through the last year.

As well as failing to improve educational outcomes, academisation is the mass centralisation of schooling, shifting oversight from councils to the Department of Education, which has coped woefully with that responsibility in the last year.

Stop “inviting” local authorities to bid for piecemeal cash pots. Just provide fixed, fair, long-term funding so they can decide what’s best for their communities.

Today I've launched a £120m scheme to introduce zero emission buses 🚌 across the country. We’re inviting authorities to submit their bids for funding as we strive to decarbonise our transport network, improve air quality & #BuildBackGreenergov.uk/government/new…

After 35 years of deregulated buses in Greater Manchester ... 35 years of rising fares and routes being cut ... We are bringing our buses back under public control. 👍🏻

Concerning precedent if the Labour leadership supports the government takeover of Liverpool City Council. If local citizens dislike how the council has been run, they can vote out its leadership. It's not for Westminster politicians to make this decision on their behalf.

This reflects what difference devolution and a Mayor can make. The Government needs to devolve much more power and spending locally. We know best how to spend money locally

The Conservatives cut council funding by 60% since 2010. So they were already on the brink of financial disaster before the pandemic. Now the government is forcing councils to hike council tax and make hard-pressed families pay the price of Tory failures.theguardian.com/society/2021/m…
