On #EarthDay2021🌎 we're reiterating that: Saving old buildings is the best 'construction solution' to fighting #ClimateChange. Not only does saving old buildings makes stronger communities & revitalizes history, it creates jobs & decreases the carbon footprint of construction
Through the adaptive reuse of a historic building, challenges including budget, program, code, occupant comfort, and sustainability were met. The result preserved a civic landmark, captured embodied carbon, and netted the owner a beautiful space.
Large windows provide ample natural light and views to the historic Church and Hill, linking the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate Rectory back to the historic site.
The original third and fourth floors of the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate Rectory are left intact apart from the removal of the floor surfaces to create an attic space. Along the walls, traces remain of the seminary’s squash courts and original finishes.
The Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate Rectory was adapted for use as the residence, while a 2-storey addition was designed to be distinct, contemporary, and subservient to the character defining heritage elements of the original seminary.
The Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate Rectory was designed as a priest’s residence with an interconnected parish office building. We were faced with the challenge of arriving at a design solution that respected the heritage value of the Basilica and the original seminary complex.
Following the renovation and restoration of the Church of Our Lady Immaculate, the adjacent Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate Rectory was sensitively restored and adapted to contemporary needs. We will be sharing photos of this unique project over the next few posts.
This weekend we began the Easter season – a season of hope. During this time of pandemic – a time of burnout, stress, and isolation – we draw hope from our work and the work of our collaborators who dare to dream of spaces to gather, learn, heal, and grow.
