“The vocation of pastor has been replaced by the strategies of religious entrepreneurs with business plans.”—Eugene Peterson Peterson has been for 40 years my guide to pastoral ministry and his warnings about modern evangelical church leadership continue to be proven true

The health of an organization’s leader determines the health of the organization. I know you probably think it’s more complicated than that, but it’s really not.

The church today is full of cover bands—people (pastors, worship leaders, etc.) trying to be someone else. It’s time to break free from that model of leadership.

Christmas music in churches is the best. Most of us have figured out that combining traditional with modern worship songs this time of year works great. Makes me wonder why many congregations haven't reached the same conclusion the rest of the year.

It's hard to see where the Southern Baptist Convention ends up after this period of in-fighting but if past history is any guide, there are three options: 1)Great leaders solve the problems; 2)the Convention explodes; 3) We go on fighting. #3 seems most likely

Some days prayer comes easy and some mornings it doesn't. The important thing is to pray anyway.

“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering" HB 10:23. Biblical faith doesn’t maintain itself; if churches don’t pay attention, their people will lose their way. Now is not the time for fast-food theology but for the red meat of biblical truth

The greatest joy in parenthood is when you see your kids with their families teaching them the same things about Jesus they learned at your house when they were children. Faith really can be transmitted from one generation to the next.

The transmission of faith from one generation to the next is a real thing. Nothing is as important for churches as to give the tools and encouragement to young parents for them to bring up their children to know and love Jesus.

The millennial generation is coming back to church even as their parents, the boomers, are leaving church. This is one of the strangest and most unexpected trends that churches today have to deal with. I don't think anyone saw this coming.

My Saturday evening prayer group conflicts with the Georgia/Alabama SEC Championship tonight. This is a spiritual crisis

I love the Southern Baptist Convention but it's wearing me out. When--if ever--will we get back to local churches cooperating for the sake of the gospel and away from the bureaucratic infighting and personal power plays that seem to occupy every waking moment?

Every week as I work through the text for Sunday's sermon, the Holy Spirit meets me with the word he has for my congregation. This is the greatest joy of the preaching ministry. It's a spiritual adventure that never grows old.

Trying to wrap my mind around Scott Hahn's observation that when Hebrews 12:29 descibes God as "a consuming fire" it's not referencing his wrath but his love . "God's nature is like a raging inferno of fiery love." His desire for our holiness burns away all the ways we fall short

Church things I love at Christmas: 1. Music that combines old and new 2. Children's programs where you never know what will happen 3. More guests than any other time of year 4. Decorations in the Sanctuary bring a great vibe 5. Preaching the cross through the manger

Millennials now form the heart of most churches not just in terms of attendance, but in terms of serving and even giving.

"Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!" PS 139:23-24. Search me...try me...lead me. That strikes me as ranking just under the Lord's Prayer as an effective way to pray

Marriage works best, I believe, when it’s lived in the shadow of the cross. You grow and change, die and are reborn a thousand times but each time you move closer to Jesus and to one another.
