Life update: I've moved to Ireland to start a fully-funded PhD @ucdpolitics. I'm stoked to be working w @AlexDukalskis to study authoritarianism, media control, & nationalism - themes central to my time as a China corro. I'll also be helping out at @AsiaUcd - do follow us there!

Had a great first APSA conference! Vancouver was a superb host city with amazing natural beauty & food. I learnt lots from all the panels I went to, made new connections, & caught up with old ones. Am particularly inspired by novel approaches to researching hard-to-study contexts

Teaching my own module this term: Media Politics under Authoritarianism. In our 1st class, we examined media’s role in society. Applying Hanitzsch's journalist roles, students assessed that there aren't watchdogs & change agents in Irish media! Is this symptomatic of democracies?

Thanks for engaging with our work, @caoilfhionnanna! Our research draws on the idea that such propaganda may seem absurd to outsiders but serves to enforce social control. By delegitimising rights defenders like you, it sets the boundaries of permissible behaviour for citizens

China can’t always censor stuff online because it risks drawing attention to the topic too. So the info control machine also delegitimises through use of terms like “so-called”. Important research into this growing trend @LinetteMLim & Alexander Dukalskis cambridge.org/core/journals/…
