Wowza news in early literacy: Study shows major gains in K-1 reading outcomes from use of the viral, and virtually free, UFLI foundational skills program. In fact, I’ve never seen effect sizes this high from a study of a literacy program. Congrats @HollyLanePhD @burnsmk1

When you're leading reading interventions, should you: A. Teach a comprehensive approach? B. Teach to the students assessed weaknesses? Many argue that (A) is the better option, but: A 2018 meta-analysis by Mathew Hall and Mathew Burns, of 26 experimental or quasi-experimental…

So help me understand. The push to remove black history-related content from Tier 1 was because one doesn’t want children to feel guilt and indoctrinated. But now, the push is to exclude it from electives which is actually student choice?!?! Anyone should be able to see this for…

Can we just full stop on this debate now? I’m begging you. Teach it with letters/graphemes.

A thread on phonemic awareness. Routinely, we see a debate as to whether it should be taught with or without letters. There is strong scientific consensus that it should be taught with letters. The NRP meta analysis showed double the reading and spelling outcomes for with letters

To summarize some of the vast research on reading instruction & intervention, the brilliant @burnsmk1 thought of meta-analyzing studies from meta-analyses. Effects sizes below. W/@KellyBCartwrig1, in special issue edited by @kymyona_burk & @janhasbrouck psycnet.apa.org/record/2023-44…

If you think Vygotsky was a constructivist, you probably never read him (I did). Here's how important he found good instruction to be. Vygotsky's Doctrine of Scientific Concepts: Its Role for Contemporary Education in Vygotsky's Educational Theory in Cultural Context

I was let go from my job at WVPB last week following threats from DHHR about my reporting on DHHR’s treatment of people with disabilities.

"What I'm haunted by is that when it wasn't working, I blamed it on children." Our new podcast is about why so many schools use materials to teach reading that are based on a debunked idea. Trailer dropped today. features.apmreports.org/sold-a-story/

PSA: A text is not inherently "decodable." Decodability is a property of the text ⭐️in relation to the reader⭐️. So, e.g., for a child who has learned the alphabet, sh, and "for," the page below is 100% decodable, but for a child who has only learned the alphabet, it's only 40%.

Two weeks ago, I had four precious 12-year-old girls, including my daughter, with me at the county fair. They were getting blue Icees and corndogs for the walk to the car and ride home. (1/21)

This thinking is how we keep classroom practice in the dark ages and ensure that significant proportions of children (mostly those who are already disadvantaged in some way) do not learn to read. Ask the teachers who’ve changed their classroom practice to adopt explicit teaching.

I'm sending my kindergarten parents links to FREE, online decodable books for practice over the summer. I'm sharing in the thread below; please feel free to add any I've missed. Must be completely free, and preferably no registration, etc., required. Thanks!
