Huge congratulations to lab member Devin Tankersley who was one of four students to receive a Fulbright research award! Tankersley will be doing research in Taiwan, where he earlier received a master's degree and began learning Taiwan Sign Language (TSL).
The Spanish-English bilingualism research team is feeling very accomplished this semester having done a large amount of data collection, coding, and analysis! The team includes (left to right) Monica Perez, Naomi Shin, Jadin Moore, and Sarah Lease.
Meet Sharmaine! She has been a great contributor to the team doing research on child speech in Diné Bizaad.
There was great linguistics representation at UROC! Audriana Sauceda presented "Combatting Linguistic Bias through Research and Community Outreach" and Melanie T'akhipaf Kirk-Lente and Joshua Birchall presented about the need for appropriate research tools in Pueblo communities.
Meet Monica! :) It is her second year with the lab, working on data collection and coding on demonstrative use in bilingual children and adults.

At our lab meeting today, lab members Evelyna Johnson, Devin Tankersley, Rikki Farrell & Kayleigh Russell presented "Grappling with variation and linguistic biases". This workshop was created for professionals who work with deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Great job team🎉
Lab co-director Naomi Shin published a chapter called "Monolingual and bilingual child language acquisition and language change" in the book "Lifespan Acquisition and Language Change-Historical sociolinguistic perspectives". Congratulations Naomi!🎉

Lab Co-Director Naomi Shin visited Louisiana State University to give a talk on children's acquisition of structured variation, and met with Dr. Janna Oetting and her D4 Child Language Lab. She also gave a research methods talk to LSU's Linguistics program. What an amazing trip!
Lab members Elisabeth Baker Martinez and Fredy Mendieta-Rodríguez presented their dissertation research at UNM's Latin American & Iberian Institute on Friday, March 1. Elisabeth and Fredy are both PhD Fellows this year. Congratulations, Elisabeth and Fredy!!

Alec Goldberg and Cormac League presented: “Dinék'ehiígo Ałchíni bich'į' Ya'áti'” on their research and findings with the Indigenous Child Language Research Center (ICLRC). They have been working with a language nest that is studying child directed speech with Navajo children.
Congratulations to lab members Dawnadine and Devin for presenting at the Diné Language Teacher Institute (DLTI) winter conference last month on January 13th! They discussed the topics of language variation and linguistic bias, and their implications for Navajo language learning.

Meet Ryan D Smith! He is a research assistant with the Indigenous Child Language Research Center (ICLRC). He studies gesture development in Navajo children and helps with administrative tasks. In his free time, Ryan enjoys drafting and woodworking, and restoring his classic car.
