NEW: Hinkley Point C will be the most expensive nuclear power station ever built. More than £700m will be spent on 'fish protection measures' due to inflexible envrionmental rules. The Nuclear Regulatory Taskforce, last year, put forward a plan to change those regulations to cut…

Last week's Govt response to the Nuclear Taskforce was concerningly non-committal. But at last, a gold-standard commitment from the PM, even hinting at similar changes in other sectors. Genuinely historic, and by far the best planning announcement from this Govt so far.

The Prime Minister spoke about the Taskforce on Nuclear Energy today: "Exactly a week ago, John Fingleton reported on our nuclear industry. He found that pointless gold plating, unnecessary red tape, well intentioned but fundamentally misguided environmental regulations, and, I…

The Chancellor has completely bottled the Nuclear Taskforce response. No commitment to accept any of it at all: they'll come back with their plans in *three months*!! Pathetic.

The stakes have been raised pretty high now. Accept the Taskforce report in full, and a sizeable group of people who are otherwise very unhappy will have something to cheer. Fudge it, and it will look like the govt is incapable of doing basically anything positive on growth.

NEW at WORKS IN PROGRESS ☢️⚡️🔋 France built forty nuclear reactors in ten years across the 1970s and 1980s, for a fraction of today's prices. For the first time in English, we tell the story of how they did it — and what the rest of the world needs to learn to do the same.

It’s been one year and Labour’s newest, radical move to revive Britain, and reinvigorate its economic life, is to…inflate house prices through easing access to credit. Nobody has tried this before!

Great to approve Sizewell C & get behind SMRs. Big steps. I do fear that funding Sizewell C directly, esp before getting final sign-off on a design, will make HS2-like cost overruns much more likely. There’s no real incentive to keep costs down when taxpayers pay directly.
