This day in 1935, the Model 299, later known as the B-17 Flying Fortress, flew its first successful test flight. More than 12,500 B-17s were built. For many, the B-17 bomber is the most iconic bomber of the Second World War. #WW2
However did it survive?
B-17 "Lovely Julie", 398th Bomb Group, hit by flak over Germany, killing toggler Sgt. Abbott and destroying almost all instruments, including oxygen and blowing off almost the entire nose. Nevertheless, the pilot made it back to England. #WW2

This day in 1944, the Rüsselsheim massacre, American airmen of a shot down B-24 bomber were forced to march through Rüsselsheim. The townspeople, angered by damage caused to their town by RAF bombing raids, started attacking the airmen, beating 6 of them to death. #WW2
